International dignitaries and construction industry leaders celebrate ...

Under the Auspices of His Excellency Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabr Al-Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Project Qatar ? the ninth annual edition of the leading construction exhibition ? was launched yesterday at The Ritz-Carlton Doha with high profile dignitaries and industry leaders in attendance.

The eagerly-awaited exhibition, taking place on April 30 ? May 3, will feature more exhibitors than ever before. In all, 2083 exhibitors will be showcasing their expertise across 62,000 sqm at the Doha Exhibition Centre and three adjacent custom-built temporary structure extensions.

Project Qatar?s Exhibitions Manager, Mr. Michel Gebrael, kicked off yesterday?s press conference with a welcome note celebrating the rapid growth of Project Qatar since its launch in 2004. 85% of the 2083 exhibitors at Project Qatar 2012 are foreign companies? a statistic that would be the envy of any global exhibition. More than 100 Malaysian companies form the largest Asian contingent from Asia while Italy leads the European pack with over 85 companies. Turkish companies will combine to span the largest exhibition space at Project Qatar 2012, with over 1,500 sqm between them. German companies will combine to cover 1,300 sqm.

Commenting on the interest Malaysian companies have in Qatar, the Ambassador of Malaysia to Qatar H.E. Mr. Ahmad Jazri noted that, ?Malaysia?s trade relations with Qatar grow stronger by the year. Malaysian companies are confident about business opportunities in Qatar because their work is well-respected locally. This leads to even more companies being interested in exhibiting at Project Qatar. This year, we hope to showcase our skills and products like never before, and to become an integral part of the fantastic development plans Qatar is undertaking.?

Mr. Pascal Roger, Senior Trade Advisor at UBIFRANCE, the organization that has led the participation of French companies at Project Qatar 2012, commented that, ?This year the French pavilion?s size has increased by over 50% and reached 42 companies from all the sub-sectors of the construction industry : architects, building materials, building equipment, furnisher, eco-friendly solutions, etc.? These companies are here to identify projects, prospective clients, and potential local partners. French companies are increasingly eager to be part of the tremendous growth underway in Qatar.?

The Belgian Ambassador to Qatar, H.E. Mr. Luc Devolder, added that, ?Belgian and Luxembourgian participation at Project Qatar this year is a sign of increasing interest in Qatar by our companies and firms. Charg? d?Affaires of the German Embassy in Doha, Mr. Mathias Kruse, noted that, ?German economic interest in Qatar continues to grow due to the diverse portfolio of the visionary development in Qatar. There are more than 75 German or German related companies in Qatar and many more active on a project basis or companies who directly export their products and services. Some of the key construction-related industries where German companies contribute and participate in Qatar are infrastructure development, construction, logistics, as well as traffic and transportation. Over the years, German companies have found Project Qatar to be a platform that showcases our world-leading expertise in each of these fields and many more.?

Commenting on the increasing interest in Turkish companies? offerings, the Commercial Counsellor of Turkey to Qatar, Mr. Mustafa Gulec, stated that, ?As Turkey moves towards production of complex equipment and niche service offerings, it is becoming an integral part of the GCC?s development fabric. No longer do Turkish companies just produce low-tech solutions, rather they compete with international heavyweights to offer cutting-edge services at competitive prices. This is just one of many reasons Turkish companies are enjoyed increasing success in Qatar.?

Besides nations who have always led the construction industry field, Project Qatar will also feature companies from nations making their debut at Project Qatar 2012: Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Spain and Taiwan. Event organizing company IFP Qatar?s General Manager, Mr. George Ayache, welcomed the debutants to the Project Qatar family by noting that ?Their presence here is critical; it provides their companies with exposure to a rapidly growing construction market in Qatar while also bringing new and innovative products and services to the attention of Qatari companies. Melissa Gilbert: Returning to Dancing With the Stars

Melissa Gilbert returned to the studio for her first Dancing with the Stars rehearsal since Monday night's performance episode left her hospitalized.

"Nobody puts Halfpint in the corner!" Maksim Chmerkovskiy's partner Tweeted, using her character's nickname from Little House on the Prairie.

Gilbert, 47, had to be helped down the ballroom stairs by fellow competitor Gavin DeGraw after injuring herself during a paso doble Monday:

After missing Tuesday's result show, in which viewers gave her at least another week to dance after eliminating Sherri Shepherd, Gilbert Tweeted:

Dyson engineers certainly know a thing or two about creating innovative vacuums and ~~fans~~ Air Multipliers, but did you know they've also dabbled in the world of high-speed racing? Such is apparently now the case, as these folks were tasked with building go-kart drag racers out of spare parts, resulting in a variety of wheeled wonders viaing for the fastest run on a makeshift strip in the office. Of course, there was a catch -- all of the dragsters had to use the motor from Dyson's DC-16 handheld vacuum in a battle for maximum torque. Now that Google+ is speeding toward the 200 million user mark, it's rolling out a revamped design that includes a new way to navigate the stream, "conversation cards," and a dedicated Hangouts page.

I checked mine today and I've still got the same old same old, but here's what I and other plussers have to look forward to within a few days, according to the blog post by Google senior vice-president Vic Gundotra:

A "dynamic ribbon of applications on the left" that replaces the "static icons" normally positioned at the upper left, next to the search bar. This new configuration is designed to allow?access to most used or favorite apps faster, and to make it easier to make adjustments as your needs change and/or evolve. The gist of it is you can drag apps in whatever order you want and hover over some "to reveal a set of quick actions." If any annoy you, you can hide them or move them into the "More" category.

G+ also wants to make it easier for its users to scan/join discussions, and you'll soon see "a stream of conversation 'cards'" that are supposed to make this easier. What it looks like is a streamlined feed that will only show you the latest comment under a post, rather than the couple that you see now.

Also in your G+ future: "An activity drawer that highlights the community around your content."

The one thing I think really stands out in G+ are the photos and videos, and the redesign promises "full bleed" images and even bigger and better things with those visual elements. "Simply put, we're hoping to make sharing more awesome by making it more evocative," writes?Gundotra.?"You know that feeling you get when a piece of art takes your breath away, or when a friend stops by with unexpected gifts? We want sharing to feel like that, every single time."

Every. Single. Time.

High bar to set, but this is one area whereG+ really shines.?

People who are into Hangouts will probably like that now there's a dedicated page just for that activity. From here, you'll be able to tap any of your friends for impromptu "Hey girl, what's up!" video chats because you'll have a constantly updated list of invites from your buddies. You can also play your own version of Chatroulette and join public and On Air chats more easily, or just watch, if you prefer.

If you find G+ at times a bit overwhelming and hard to wade through, a new Explore page might be the life preserver you need, as it "shows what's interesting and trending across the network."

There are definitely hints of Facebook's latest changes among the new additions, including "a new profile with much bigger photos" that looks a lot like the banner cover photos over on Timeline, as well as "a new chat list that puts your friends front and center" that should look familiar to those who use Facebook chat.

Facebook users who hate Timeline (and we know, there are plenty of you out there) might appreciate the relative simplicity of the G+ profile, which has a lot less clutter than the current Facebook profile.

The Queen has been ruler for a very, very long time. It used to be that she was a kind a generous Queen, one who gave to the needy, took care of her people, and worked herself to the bone for them. She was the peaceful sort, one to negotiate rather than battle, but she could not stay that way forever when a neighboring kingdom declared war to take over her land. The neighboring kingdom saw her as weak, and for that her people suffered. The Queen was desperate, her measly army decimated. It drove her to take grave measures, delving into a dark magic that she did not fully understand. Deep in her dungeon?s libraries she discovered a mirror the likes of which none had seen for quite some time. It spoke to her, she listened. It told her anything she wished to know, even the future, and it told her how to prevail.

The Queen used this new knowledge to cast a spell on her fallen army, she had them resurrected. And from the ground they rose as much tougher and scarier men, they had no need for breath, nor water, nor food. With her new dark magic she produced spies so she could see everything. With this new army the Queen turned the tides and enslaved the neighboring kingdom, absorbing it and resurrecting the men her army felled, adding to her number.

But all of this magic came at a heavy price, and she found her body aged quite a number of years; in the body of an old woman at the young age of twenty five. This horrified her, and she raged at the mirror for not warning her of this. She asked it how she could gain back her lost youth, and it replied that such a thing would require the sacrifice of a young maiden. The Queen was horrified, and did not speak to the mirror again for quite some time. She worked on rebuilding the damage done to her land, and the land she had gained, wanting her people to prosper. But unrest was brewing, the citizens did not like the new army, it frightened them, and the Queen herself was dying more each day. Again she grew desperate, her work not yet done. She used that as an excuse for her first victim, and the next, and by the next she did not need an excuse, for she was Queen. You see with each maiden?s blood that she bathed in she grew more beautiful, but also grew less human. The Queen had the mirror placed in her throne room, and with its information she added two more kingdoms to her land. Her consideration towards the common people dwindled to next to nothing; those who obeyed were allowed to live, while those who disobeyed were made an example of. Her kingdom thrived however, and the nobles got to reap the rewards for this.

When one day the mirror bore news of her demise, the Queen took every measure to counter it. The mirror prophesied that a baby girl with a special birthmark was born to dethrone her, and when her troops could not find her she had each newborn baby girl in her land killed. She also sent troops to demand the newborn girl with the special birthmark of the only two free kingdoms left standing, and when they refused she went to war with them. The newborn girl turned out to be the new princess of Ebone, one of the two kingdoms left standing. The King of Ebone had his daughter sent far away by his own sorcerer so that she may be safe. These two kingdoms have held her off for quite some time; the war still goes on today, twenty years later.

Romney Solidifies GOP Position but Obama Gets Boost From Women

A widening gender gap, modest economic gains, an edge on key issues and broad advantages in personal popularity are boosting Barack Obama's re-election prospects. Yet Mitt Romney, moving to close the deal in his own party, holds opportunities of his own for the road ahead.

Obama has returned to a single-digit lead vs. Romney in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, 51-44 percent among registered voters, after a virtual dead heat last month. That includes Obama's largest margin to date among women, 57-38 percent. He trails by 8 points among men.

Underscoring that gender gap, Obama leads Romney by 19 points among all adults in trust to handle "women's issues," his single largest advantage among a dozen issues tested in this poll, which was produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates. That includes a 10-point lead for Obama on women's issues among men, growing to 27 points among women.

After an extended period of debate and political positioning on a range of issues of concern to women, there's also a sharp gender gap in the president's overall job approval rating - 13 points higher among women than men, another record in ABC/Post polls. Obama's 50 percent approval rating overall rests on positive views among 56 percent of women vs. 43 percent of men.

Other factors are at play. Obama leads Romney by significant margins in trust to handle six key issues in all, ranging from international affairs to protecting the middle class to handling social issues such as abortion and gay marriage. Romney clearly leads on just one, handling the deficit. Obama also leads on a range of personal attributes, including by a vast 38 points in being seen as the more friendly and likable of the two and by 26 points as "more inspiring."?

Among issues, the economy, and the broader sentiment it inspires, are key to the election. Today the fewest number of Americans in more than a year say the country is on the wrong track, nearly half say their local economy is improving and a sense that jobs are "very difficult" to find has eased by 14 percentage points from last summer.

In addition, approval of Obama's handling of the economy is up by 6 points from last month, "strong" disapproval has eased by 8 points from its record high and he leads Romney by 12 points as better understanding average Americans' economic problems.

ROMNEY - Yet there are opportunities for Romney.? He now leads Rick Santorum by 20 percentage points among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents as the preferred candidate for the GOP nomination, up from a scant 2 points last month. Mopping up within his party gives Romney his first chance to turn his full fire on the incumbent.

While "wrong track" sentiment is down by 13 points since last fall, a still broad 64 percent of Americans say the country's off course. More, 76 percent, say that as far as they're concerned the economy still is in a recession. In perhaps Romney's strongest line of attack, 54 percent still disapprove of Obama's performance on the economy - 5 points lower than last month but a continuous majority since July 2010.

Head-to-head, Romney has 47 percent support, Obama 43 percent, in trust to handle the economy - not a statistically significant difference but an indication of Obama's vulnerability on this central concern. And they're essentially even (Obama +3) on trust to handle creating jobs.

Romney has made inroads against Obama on some issues compared with ABC/Post results in February. Obama then led by 20 points in trust to handle terrorism, 18 points on better protecting the middle class and 10 points on handling taxes. Those have eased to 7, 10 and 3 points now.

Romney? may also find political fuel if gasoline prices continue to rise; while Obama escapes most direct blame (see Monday's analysis), 62 percent disapprove of how he's handling the price of gas, no worse than last month's 65 percent, but not substantively better, and broadly negative.

Romney, however, looks little better overall against Obama than does Santorum, who trails Obama by 52-42 percent among registered voters. That makes Romney's support in the general election look more anti-Obama, and generally pro-Republican, than specifically pro-Romney.

ECONOMY - Marking the interaction between political and economic sentiment, Obama, when tested against Romney, does far worse among people with more negative economic outlooks - e.g., among those who say jobs in their area are very hard to find (just 33 percent of registered voters in this group support Obama), who think the country's still in a recession (43 percent) or who say they're in the middle class, but struggling to remain there. In the latter group just 35 percent back Obama over Romney; among those who say they're comfortably in the middle class or moving up, by contrast, Obama's support jumps to 59 percent.

In these equations, perceptions of the economy's trajectory matters. Among registered voters who think the country's in a recession but climbing out of it, Obama leads Romney by more than 2-1, 66-30 percent. Among those who see a recession but without economic improvement in their area, by contrast, it's Romney by a similar margin, 68-27 percent.

GOP RACE - Romney, as noted, has made major strides in support for his party's nomination. He leads Santorum in preference to be the nominee by 42-22 percent among Republicans and GOP-leaning independents, vs. 31-29 percent early last month.

Among those who don't currently support him, Romney leads as second choice, with 48 percent. Similarly, 52 percent of those who don't support Romney now nonetheless say they'd rather see him as the nominee than have the convention draft a new candidate entirely.

While 52 percent also say Santorum should stay in the contest, many fewer leaned Republicans, 27 and 32 percent, respectively, say that either Newt Gingrich or Ron Paul should remain in the race given their current standings. And even Santorum's support for continuing is fairly tepid; in May 2008, for comparison, many more leaned Democrats, 64 percent, said Hillary Clinton should keep running, despite then-mounting odds for Obama's nomination.

Economic credentials are a strength for Romney in the Republican contest, an issue, again, that he's likely to seek to turn to his advantage in the general election. Forty-eight percent of leaned Republicans pick him in trust to handle the economy, vs. 16 percent for Paul and just 12 percent apiece for Santorum and Gingrich.

Another measure, though, emphasizes difficulties Romney may face in motivating elements of his base in a general election campaign. Asked whom they trust more to handle social issues such as abortion and gay marriage, 29 percent of Republicans and party leaners pick Santorum, 27 percent Romney. (Romney, as noted, is about even with Obama among all Americans in trust to handle the economy, but trails him, by 8 points, in trust to deal with social issues.)

The public divides evenly, 38-39 percent, on the parlor-game question of whether the GOP contest has made Romney stronger, or weakened him, for a general election campaign. Partisanship informs these views: Leaned Republicans by a 24-point margin think the primary race has strengthened Romney; Democrats and their leaners, by 21 points, say it's made him weaker.

ATTRIBUTES - In any case, as he turns toward the general election, Romney's personal profile needs work. Previous ABC/Post polls have recorded his unusually weak favorability ratings, the lowest for a leading candidate in ABC/Post polls conducted during presidential primary seasons since 1984. And results in this survey extend those findings.?

As noted, Obama leads Romney by 64-26 percent on who seems to be the more friendly and likable person. Notably, Romney leads by just 11 points on this attribute, 53-42 percent, even among Republicans, and by just 10 points among conservatives. Obama, by contrast, leads Romney on this score by more than 75 points among Democrats and liberals, and by 31 and 45 points, respectively, among independents and moderates.

In being seen as "more inspiring," similarly, it's a 55-29 percent Obama advantage, including a 22-point lead among independents, the key swing voters in national elections. And the president leads by 49-37 percent on better understanding the economic problems people are having.

In addition to his comparative shortfall in terms of the common touch, Romney trails Obama by 10 points in perceptions of who's been the most consistent in his positions, a frequent line of attack in the GOP primaries. They're close on two other attributes, being the stronger leader (46-40 percent, Obama-Romney) and having a clearer vision for the future (45-40 percent).

There's some vulnerability for Obama in another attribute: Thirty-nine percent of Americans see his views on the size and role of government as a major reason to oppose him, outnumbering the 22 percent who see this as major reason to support him - a 17-point net negative. (The rest, 34 percent, say it's not a major factor.) Obama's handling of the economy, for its part, is a 14-point net negative for him.

Far more don't rate either Romney's wealth or his Mormon religion as a factor in their vote preference - 71 and 80 percent, respectively. Among those who do, the former is a net negative for him by 13 points, the latter, by 10.

FAIRNESS - If Obama's views on the role of government are seen more negatively than positively, he has the edge on another aspect of this key debate: Americans by 52-37 percent see "unfairness in the economic system that favors the wealthy" as a bigger problem than "over-regulation of the free market that interferes with growth and prosperity."

That's similar to the division on this question in January - and it matters. Among the majority of registered voters who see system unfairness, Obama leads Romney by 70-27 percent. Among those more concerned with over-regulation, the tables turn to a 73-23 percent Romney lead.

ISSUES - While personal attributes matter, so does trust to handle specific issues. As noted, Obama currently leads Romney in trust to handle six items - women's issues (by 19 points), international affairs (by 17), protecting the middle class and dealing with health care policy (both by 10), social issues (by 8) and terrorism (by 7). (Obama's lead on health care policy is notable given the unpopularity of the federal health care law whose fate is now before the U.S. Supreme Court.)

The two candidates are close - 2 to 5 points between them - in trust to handle the economy, job creation, energy policy and taxes, and to support small businesses. Romney leads Obama by 13 points in trust to handle the federal deficit.

In another comparison, Obama and Romney are about evenly rated as being "about right" ideologically - Obama by 44 percent, Romney by 42 percent. But 40 percent call Obama "too liberal," more than the 33 percent who call Romney "too conservative" (more instead have no opinion of Romney on this question), giving the Republican more room to maneuver.

Notably, more Republicans think Obama is too liberal (76 percent) than the number of Democrats who think Romney's too conservative (57 percent). And 44 percent of independents see Obama as too liberal, vs. 29 percent who see Romney as overly conservative.

GENDER and RACE - Democratic candidates customarily do better among women than men in presidential elections, not least because women are more likely than men to associate themselves with the Democratic Party. Obama did 12 points better vs. John McCain among women than among men in the 2008 election (+13 points among women, +1 among men) - almost exactly matching the average (a 13-point differential for the Democrat) in exit polls since 1976.

Highs, computed in this way, were a 22-point gender gap in 2000 and 17 points in 1996 and 1980 alike. Today's figure is higher: Obama leads Romney by 19 points among women but trails by 8 among men, a 27-point difference.

White women, in particular, have shifted in Obama's direction since the last ABC/Post poll March 10. Among registered voters, white women then favored Romney over Obama by 55-38 percent; today they divide evenly, 47-48 percent. Preferences among white men, by contrast, are essentially unchanged, at 61-35 percent for Romney now, 63-33 percent a month ago.

The shift among white women enabled Obama this month to tie his high score against Romney among white registered voters, at 42-53 percent. Obama, by contrast, leads by very wide margins among nonwhites of both sexes, 78-19 percent.

METHODOLOGY - This ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted by telephone April 5-8, 2012, among a random national sample of 1,003 adults, including landline and cell-phone-only respondents. (Several questions included an oversample of an additional 100 African-American respondents.) Results have a margin of sampling error of 4.0 points for the full sample. ?The survey was produced for ABC News by Langer Research Associates of New York, N.Y., with sampling, data collection and tabulation by Abt-SRBI of New York, N.Y.

Archos Child Pad arrives at FCC, escapes drool-free

If our eyes don't deceive us, that's the Archos Child Pad that just arrived at the FCC. Now, we know what you're thinking: any proper test of this tablet would require someone gnawing on the corners and drooling on the screen, but c'mon -- this is the FCC we're talking about. Curiously, the test documents reveal support for 802.11n, which comes as a nice surprise, since we'd previously only known of support for 802.11b/g. As you might've expected, WiFi is the only radio in the Child Pad, which means the little one won't be pairing it with any Bluetooth devices or putting the hurt on your data plan any time soon. This rubbery, resistive touch, Ice Cream Sandwich-filled creation was previously announced for $129 with availability in late March. While the Archos folks may have missed that goal, with the FCC's stamp of approval, it appears your tike won't have long to coat the Child Pad in celebratory slobber.

Van Der Beek: 'Dawson's' 'paid almost nothing'

James Van Der Beek is finally cashing in on ?Dawson?s Creek? -- a show the actor says paid ?almost nothing? during its five season run.

?There was no residual money,? he told TODAY.com.? ?I was 20.? It was a bad contract. I saw almost nothing from that.?

Now the newly remarried father of two is playing a fictionalized version of his post-teen heartthrob self on the new ABC comedy ?Don't Trust the B? in Apartment 23.?

?I auditioned against six other James Van Der Beeks for this role,? he joked when the show was first presented for TV critics last winter. ?By default, it was me.?

On the series -- premiering Wednesday -- Van Der Beek pokes fun at his WB days by seducing women with Dawson Leery?s trademark flannel shirts and Paula Cole?s tune??I Don?t Wanna Wait? (the ?Dawson?s Creek? theme song).

Van Der Beek, 36, said he signed on to play the former lover and BFF of New York scam artist Chloe (Krysten Ritter) -- who terrorizes, but then befriends her new roommate June (Dreama Walker) -- ?when the (?Dawson?s Creek?) money ran out.?

But don?t feel too sorry for him:?According to documents obtained by TMZ?during his divorce from actress Heather McComb,?the actor?was still pulling in a hefty $49,343 a month (with $4,100 going to charity) as of 2010!

While Van Der Beek has continued to appear in movies, he admits it wasn?t always easy to poke fun at himself -- or the character that made him once so famous.

?You are incredibly fortunate whatever success falls on you, which is what happened with me,? he said.? ?But as soon as that happens, I think there is a tendency to feel like you have something to lose. Or something to protect. That can often lead to taking yourself a little too seriously.?

Adam: Having been in the industry now for roughly 5 years, my answers are probably surprisingly modest and not as extravagant as one might presume.
