Iran: Monkey successfully sent into space

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iranian state TV says the country has successfully sent a monkey into space in what's described as another step toward Tehran's goal of a manned space flight.

Monday's report said the monkey was sent up in a Pishtam, or Explorer, rocket to a height of 120 kilometers (72 miles). It gave no other details on the timing or location of the launch, but said the monkey returned safely.

Iran has said it seeks to send an astronaut into space as part of its ambitious aerospace program. In 2010, Iran said it launched a rocket into space carrying a mouse, turtle and worms.

The U.S. and its allies worry that technology from the space program could also be used to develop long-range missiles that could potentially be armed with nuclear warheads.

Britain introduces same-sex marriage bill

LONDON (AP) ? The British government published a bill to legalize same-sex marriage Friday, and said lawmakers will get their first vote on it in Parliament next month.

The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill extends marriage to gay couples but excludes clergy in the Church of England ? the country's official faith ? from having to carry out the ceremonies.

That is intended to placate religious opponents of same-sex unions ? though it has not stopped criticism of the bill from religious leaders.

"We feel that marriage is a good thing and we should be supporting more couples to marry and that is exactly what the proposals being brought forward today do," Equalities Minister Maria Miller told BBC radio.

But she said the bill offered "protections ... for churches who feel that this isn't appropriate for their particular beliefs."

The bill is likely to become law because it is supported by Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron, many members of his Cabinet and most Liberal Democrat and Labour lawmakers.

But some traditionalist Conservative lawmakers say they will vote against it. The first debate and vote are scheduled for Feb 5.

Church of England clergy ? and those in the equivalent Church in Wales ? have a legal duty to marry parishioners that does not apply to other religions.

Miller said that "to protect them from legal challenge ... the bill makes clear that this duty does not extend to same-sex couples."

The bill allows for other religious groups who wish to conduct same-sex ceremonies ? such as Quakers and liberal Jews ? to do so if their governing bodies approve.

Since 2005, gay couples in Britain have been able to form civil partnerships, which give them the same legal protection, adoption and inheritance rights as heterosexual married partners ? but not the label of marriage.

Polls suggest a majority of Britons support extending marriage to same-sex couples, but the issue remains divisive.

Florida court tosses two Casey Anthony lying convictions

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - Casey Anthony, who was famously acquitted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter Caylee in 2011, saw a Florida appeals court overturn two of her four convictions on Friday for lying to detectives investigating the toddler's disappearance.

While Anthony was acquitted of murdering Caylee, whose body was ultimately found in woods near their home, she was found guilty of lying four times to detectives who responded to a 2008 call from Anthony's mother reporting the girl missing.

Anthony's lawyers appealed the convictions, saying her lies should have been construed as a single violation because her statements were made over the course of one extended interview with detectives who responded to the missing person report.

The Fifth District Court of Appeal in Daytona Beach split the difference on Friday, finding that Anthony gave two separate interviews to detectives, thus letting two convictions stand but throwing out the rest.

The court also found that Anthony was not in police custody during her interviews and rejected a defense argument that all convictions be thrown out because she was not read Miranda rights that allow her to choose not to speak to police.

Anthony's lawyer, Cheney Mason said in a statement that he was "very happy with this latest victory," adding no decision had been taken on whether to pursue further appeals.

Jeff Ashton, one of Anthony's prosecutors who is now the state attorney in Florida's Orange County, said he understood and respected the appellate court's ruling. "Once the trial court vacates the appropriate counts pursuant to the District Court's opinion, we expected the case of the State of Florida vs. Casey Marie Anthony will be closed," Ashton said in a statement.

In July 2008, Anthony told detectives that Caylee was kidnapped by a nanny, triggering a nationwide search for the girl that was followed intensely by cable television news and entertainment shows. At trial, her defense lawyers claimed Caylee drowned in the family's backyard pool.

Prosecutors presented evidence that Caylee might have been smothered by duct tape wrapped around her head before her body was left in the woods.

Anthony was convicted of lying four times when she told lead detective Yuri Melich that she left Caylee with a nanny named Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez, that she was employed at Universal Studios Orlando, that she told co-workers that Caylee was missing, and that she later received a phone call from Caylee.

A Central Florida woman named Zenaida Gonzalez subsequently sued Anthony for defamation. Her civil suit was delayed while Anthony refused to testify during the course of her criminal appeal.

'Hansel

'Hansel' has had a troubled production history and is an admittedly out-there twist on an old fairy tale. How are critics liking the film?

By Molly Driscoll,?Staff Writer / January 25, 2013

'Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters' stars Jeremy Renner (r.) and Gemma Arterton (l.) as the titular siblings.

Fairy tales are still hot commodities in Hollywood, which is undoubtedly one of the reasons behind a new film starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters." In the new spin on the story, Hansel and Gretel are all grown up and harboring a grudge against witches like the one who took them captive and was planning to eat them (seriously, fairy tales are way more grim than you remember).

The two siblings are protected from witches' curses, making them uniquely qualified to take on those who are causing problems. They work as bounty hunters who take care of witchy problems, and in this particular story, Hansel and Gretel take on a group of them led by lead witch Muriel (Famke Janssen).

"Hansel" has experienced a somewhat troubled production history, with its release date originally scheduled for March of last year. It was then moved up to earlier this month, Jan. 11, and then switched again to Jan. 25. A statement from the movie?s studio, Paramount, suggested that the second change took place to enable the movie to be released in IMAX.

?The Imax experience continues to be the most immersive and entertaining way to see films and we are thrilled to be releasing Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 3D now in late January so moviegoers have an opportunity to see the film in this way,? Paramount president of domestic marketing and distribution Megan Colligan told the Hollywood Reporter.

The movie was not screened for critics before its official release, and so far, the reviews that have been posted have been lukewarm.

David Voigt of Examiner.com said the movie has its entertaining moments but falls flat at other times.

"Hardly a movie that will ever run the risk of being taken with a completely straight face, this... is a film that has some fun gonzo moments appropriate with the genre, but ones that are also fairly restrained and doesn't do nearly far enough," Voigt wrote. "Heavy on the effects and the set pieces, it moves along at a fair enough pace but there are longs stretches where the film feels re-written and often drab."

Thawing 'dry ice' drives groovy action on Mars

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Researchers using NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter see seasonal changes on far-northern Martian sand dunes caused by warming of a winter blanket of frozen carbon dioxide.

Earth has no naturally frozen carbon dioxide, though pieces of manufactured carbon-dioxide ice, called "dry ice," sublime directly from solid to gas on Earth, just as the vast blankets of dry ice do on Mars. A driving factor in the springtime changes where seasonal coverings of dry ice form on Mars is that thawing occurs at the underside of the ice sheet, where it is in contact with dark ground being warmed by early-spring sunshine through translucent ice. The trapped gas builds up pressure and breaks out in various ways.

Transient grooves form on dunes when gas trapped under the ice blanket finds an escape point and whooshes out, carrying out sand with it. The expelled sand forms dark fans or streaks on top of the ice layer at first, but this evidence disappears with the seasonal ice, and summer winds erase most of the grooves in the dunes before the next winter. The grooves are smaller features than the gullies that earlier research linked to carbon-dioxide sublimation on steeper dune slopes.

Similar activity has been documented and explained previously where seasonal sheets of frozen carbon dioxide form and thaw near Mars' south pole. Details of the different northern seasonal changes are newly reported in a set of three papers for the journal Icarus. A video showing some of the changes is online at http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/video/index.php?id=1184 .

The findings reinforce growing appreciation that Mars today, however different from its former self, is still a dynamic world, and however similar to Earth in some respects, displays some quite unearthly processes.

"It's an amazingly dynamic process," said Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute, Tucson. She is lead author of the first of the three new reports. "We had this old paradigm that all the action on Mars was billions of years ago. Thanks to the ability to monitor changes with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, one of the new paradigms is that Mars has many active processes today."

With three Martian years (six Earth years) of data in hand from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera, the researchers report on the sequence and variety of seasonal changes. The spring changes include outbursts of gas carrying sand, polygonal cracking of the winter ice blanketing the dunes, sandfalls down the faces of the dunes, and dark fans of sand propelled out onto the ice.

"It is a challenge to catch when and how those changes happen, they are so fast," said Ganna Portyankina of the University of Bern in Switzerland, lead author of the second report. "That's why only now we start to see the bigger picture that both hemispheres actually tell us similar stories."

The process of outrushing gas that carves grooves into the northern dunes resembles the process creating spider-shaped features in far southern Mars, as seen in an image at http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA12249, but the spiders have not been seen in the north. The seasonal dry-ice sheets overlie different types of terrain in the two hemispheres. In the south, diverse terrains include the flat, erodible ground where the spiders form, but in the north, a broad band of sand dunes encircles the permanent north polar ice cap.

Another difference is in brightening on parts of the ice-covered dunes. This brightening in the north results from the presence of water-ice frost, while in the south, similar brightening is caused by fresh carbon dioxide. The third paper of the Icarus set, by Antoine Pommerol of the University of Bern and co-authors, reports distribution of the water frost using the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM). The light water frost is blown around by spring winds.

The University of Arizona, Tucson, operates the HiRISE camera, which was built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., Boulder, Colo. The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, Md., provided and operates CRISM. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Denver, built the orbiter. For more about the mission, visit: http://www.nasa.gov/mro .

Vuemix lets you browse nine videos at once as you surf web shows ...

vuemix

If you feel like it takes too long to surf through video channels to find what you want, then Vuemix has an app for you. The new Vuemix for iPad app will let you play nine videos on the screen at the same time so that you can figure out which channel you want to watch more easily. And it does so without choking your internet bandwidth.

Available today for the iPad in the Apple iTunes App Store, Vuemix for iPad is the latest app to take advantage of cloud computing. It takes a variety of internet video sources and mixes them together into a single video stream in a web-connected data center, or cloud. Then it sends a single video stream to you with nine videos embedded within it.

?All the videos come in and we mix it on the fly,? said Govind?Kizhepat, chief executive of Vuemix, in an interview with VentureBeat. ?It?s a brand new primary technology to search, browse, and share videos on the web.?

vuemix 2

This streaming technology with multiple active video windows lets you see what is happening on each web video channel, much like the picture-in-picture function that is available in most televisions. But Vuemix takes that function to its limit by allowing you to watch nine videos side by side. It also organizes them for you, grouping videos into sections (see picture at right) such as?Sports, Movies, Fashion, Technology, News, Comedy, Entertainment, Social, Music, Business and more.

You can tap one section to drill down on it, and then Vuemix will present you with nine different choices within that category. If you pick news, you can see videos from CNN, Fox News, NBC, and more. You can upgrade your app for a $2.99 in-app purchase after a ?try-before-you-buy? period. The app works with version 5 of Apple?s iOS operating system.

There is a limit to how much you?ll see at once, in terms of how long the videos play for. If something is being livestreamed, then Vuemix can?t turn that into a live screen on your iPad. But once a video is posted, then it is up for grabs.

Vuemix plays about 45 seconds of video for each of the channels showing at any one time. Kizhepat figures that gives you plenty of time to decide which one you want to watch. The iPad is capable of playing just one video at a time. So when Vuemix plays a video, it may be a single stream of a single channel, when you are watching just one show, or it may be a single stream that mixes a bunch of videos into a single stream, like when you are looking at nine videos playing at the same time. If you hover over one video, the audio engages.

Yahoo, Google and other video companies crawl the web for video. Vuemix does that too, but it goes a step further. It indexes the pages, but it also grabs the videos and indexes them continuously. Then it separates the videos into categories. Extracting video is an extremely complex matter, Kizhepat said.

?We have a sophisticated browser emulator in the crowd to grab the videos,? he said. ?Once it is grabbed, it is indexed. Then, once it is indexed, we cache it. Caching has been around for a while? with companies such as Akamai. But as a user, you click on a video and they send you one video stream. With Vuemix, the videos are dynamically transcoded (converted instantaneously) in the cloud and mixed into a single stream. It changes the formatting from HTML5 to Flash or another format, as needed.

?That?s all happening in the cloud,? he said.

You can search through your Vuemix videos the same way you do a text search. You enter the topic that interests you and choose from the?videos that are playing. You can view multiple videos of the search results simultaneously, without having to click through video after video to find the one you want. You can tap on one video and expand it to full-screen at high resolution. When you do so, Vuemix connects the user to the web site (such as YouTube), which then serves the video to the user. In this manner, Vuemix?s video infrastructure hands off the user to the video content owner. So when you use internet bandwidth to view a video, you use the bandwidth of the content owner, not Vuemix. That keeps Vuemix?s costs low.

?It?s just like Google search,? Kizhepat said. ?They show you web pages. We show you nine videos.?

Kizhepat said his company is working with multiple TV service operators to bring its technology to ?second screen? experiences for subscribers. In this scenario, the second screen (the iPad) can act as a remote control. Those deals could roll out in the second half of the year. In that role, Vuemix could become a white-label service for those operators. On top of that, it will operate its own consumer apps.

?Vuemix will change the way people search, view and consume video content,? said Kizhepat. ?By being able to view multiple videos simultaneously, the Vuemix platform not only delivers a custom interactive experience that is not possible using today?s conventional video platforms, but also makes video searching and browsing a lot quicker.?

You can also build your own ?mix? to share with Facebook friends. You select your own favorite videos and share the collage of videos on your Facebook wall with one click. That means you can become a re-broadcaster of video content, and other people can subscribe to your broadcast. You can mark your video mixes as public or private. Web broadcasters will like it because Vuemix will deliver views to those broadcasters, Kizhepat said.

?The cable and satellite operators will love this,? he said. ?You will see the electronic programming guide (on your TV) turned upside down.?

Vuemix also gives content owners the ability to create a unique, customizable multi-tile video experience for each consumer. Kizhepat says that gives the channel owner a chance to significantly increase the time that a person stays engaged with the channel. The platform conforms to web and HTTP standards. It generates video formats dynamically, depending on the receiving device of the consumer. The company plans to expand beyond the iPad to iMac, Android, and Windows devices. Vuemix has to change its app depending on the screen size you are using.

Kizhepat is a pioneer in consumer audio and video compression. He previously led NetXen, a 10G Ethernet chip company that was acquired by Qlogic. He was also the founder of iCompression. Other members of his team come from Qlogic, Netflix, Akamai and a variety of other web and media companies.

Kizhepat started research in early 2010 and then incorporated the firm in 2011. Vuemix has raised $3 million in two rounds, including a seed round and a Series A led by a top-tier venture capital firm, Kizhepat said.

Mental health treatment centre takes shape - The London Free Press

One of the London area?s largest construction projects is well underway marking a new era in regional health care.

After 10?years of planning, EllisDon Corp. is leading a consortium that is constructing a new mental health care centre for St. Joseph?s Health Care London.

The $830-million project includes a new 156-bed, 456,000-sq.-ft. mental health care treatment centre now being built south of Parkwood Hospital. It will replace the aging Regional Mental Health Care London, formerly London Psychiatric Hospital.

The contract is the biggest EllisDon has taken on in the city since the company was founded in London more than 60 years ago.

The new facilities will usher in much-improved mental health care facilities. Institutional wards and communal washrooms will be replaced by comfortable private rooms with a view of London?s Westminster Ponds.

A new 89-bed forensic facility in St. Thomas will care for patients involved in the criminal justice system.

How hackers can unlock your genetic secrets

Christine Cox / NBC News file

Researchers say genetic genealogy databases can be leveraged to unlock more sensitive genetic information.

By Alan Boyle, Science Editor, NBC News

Researchers have shown that it's possible to link your identity to supposedly secret genetic information about your predisposition to diseases, merely by analyzing family-tree databases and other publicly available information.

"It was quite surprising," said Yaniv Erlich, a genetic researcher at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. "When we got the first family, I was surprised. ... It's as if you opened a box that for a long time was locked."

Erlich led the research team whose work is being published in this week's issue of the journal Science. The team's study already has led to a tightening of security measures for federally sponsored genetic databases.

The security-cracking trick relies on the availability of genetic information linked to surnames in a variety of public family-tree databases. DNA samples from males can be tested to look at dozens of genetic markers on the Y-chromosome that change only rarely from generation to generation. If the markers from two individuals with the same surname are a close match, that's a tip-off that the two are closely related, even if they don't know each other.

Tens of thousands of people (including yours truly) make that information public in hopes that someone else will match up with their results. The genealogical markers aren't linked to disease or other specific traits. But under the right circumstances, they could provide an opening for links with other, more sensitive genetic information.

How the secrets were revealed
Erlich and his colleagues conducted a three-step process to see how easy it'd be to use that opening. First, they analyzed anonymous Y-chromosome data from a public database for the 1000 Genomes Project, to come up with the DNA coding for markers that are used for genealogical purposes. Then they compared those markers against entries in the two largest family-tree databases, Ysearch and the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation.

The researchers said their analysis projected a success rate of 12 percent for recovering the surnames of U.S. Caucasian males. Another 5 percent would theoretically be linked up with the wrong surnames. They said upper- to middle-class Caucasian males were easier to identify, presumably because they're more likely to participate in the family-tree databases.

Once the surnames were identified, the third step was to look at other publicly available sources to go from the surname to a specific individual: Some genetic databases, for example, include information about the age and the state of residence of an anonymous participant, and even the number of children and their birth order. Those clues were added to information gleaned from other sources, ranging from public-record search engines to obituaries.

The researchers linked five specific individuals in three separate families with supposedly anonymous genetic records. The process took three to seven hours for each family pedigree, the scientists said. Then they traced those three family-tree pedigrees to find other connections between relatives and sensitive genetic data. "In total, surname inference breached the privacy of nearly 50 individuals from these three pedigrees," the researchers wrote.

"We show that if, for example, your Uncle Dave submitted his DNA to a genetic genealogy database, you could be identified," Melissa Gymrek, a member of the Erlich Lab and the Science paper's principal author, explained in a news release. "In fact, even your fourth cousin Patrick, whom you've never met, could identify you if his DNA is in the database, as long as he's paternally related to you."

What is to be done with data?
Erlich and his colleagues made a point not to reveal the identities of those individuals, and said they were not advocating a clampdown on the availability of genetic information.

"Quite the opposite," Erlich said. "We found the gene for two devastating pediatric disorders by analyzing the data in public databases. Using these databases, we gave hope to these families and to other parents. We don't want to take away these databases. ... What we really want to do here is to have this really mature conversation about privacy ? to tell people we cannot completely protect the privacy, but also to tell them about the benefits."

For years, experts have worried that sensitive genetic data could be used to discriminate against patients, potential employees or would-be insurance customers. Such discrimination is illegal when it comes to employment or health insurance, but the law doesn't cover life insurance, disability insurance or long-term care insurance. Theoretically, an insurer could search through genetic records and turn you down because you have a genetic predisposition to, say, Alzheimer's disease.?

In a Science policy paper, representatives of the National Human Genome Research Institute and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences at the National Institutes of Health said it was time to "re-examine how to balance the protection of research participants ... with the societal benefits likely to be gained through the enhanced research that broad data sharing facilitates."

They said NIH "acted swiftly to mitigate future risks" by working with the NIGMS' genetic repository to shift the data about the age of study participants out of public view and into a controlled-access area of the database.

"That reduces the risk," Erlich said. "It creates another fence."

And what about the genealogical genetic data? Max Blankfeld, vice president for operations and marketing at Family Tree DNA, said his company has been dealing with privacy issues for more than a decade?? and doesn't expect the latest research to lead to policy changes. Family Tree DNA has been running the Ysearch database as a free public resource for a decade, but does not force any of its more than 400,000 participants to use it.

"People voluntarily post their information in that database, and therefore it has nothing really to do with the vast majority of the people who take the test and choose to have it protected by Family Tree DNA," Blankfeld said. "This data, we don't share with anyone."

More about genetic ancestry:

In addition to Erlich and Gymrek, the authors of "Identifying Personal Genomes by Surname Inference" include Amy McGuire, David Golan and Eran Halperin. The work was supported by the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship, the Edmond J. Safra Center for Bioinformatics at Tel Aviv University, and a gift from James and Cathleen Stone.

The authors of the Science policy paper, "The Complexities of Genomic Identifiability," include Laura Rodriguez, Lisa Brooks and Erick Green of NHGRI and Judith Greenberg of NIGMS.

What Is an Assault Weapon?

For years, a debate has raged over the role of assault weapons in a nation where the "right to keep and bear arms" is enshrined in the Constitution. But what exactly is an assault weapon?

The weapons have come to the forefront with President Barack Obama's gun control proposals, including a push for a renewed assault weapons ban and for a ban on high-capacity magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

Though politicians and gun enthusiasts each have their own definition of what is and isn't an assault weapon, a useful framework for the debate was written into law in 1994, when the Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) was enacted during the Clinton administration.

That law, according to Mike Cooper on PolicyMic.com, defined an assault weapon as "any semiautomatic rifle with a detachable magazine and at least two of the following five items: a folding or telescopic stock; a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon; a bayonet mount; a flash suppressor or threaded barrel (a barrel that can accommodate a flash suppressor); or a grenade launcher."

That definition, however, raises about as many questions as it answers. For example, how does having a bayonet mount (but not an actual bayonet) turn a rifle into an assault rifle? And outside of Civil War re-enactments, who actually still uses a bayonet? [10 Major Innovations That Revolutionized Combat]

"Yes, they still make them," Cooper wrote. "In a desperate wartime situation, a bayonet gives you something somewhat more effective than a raised middle finger when you've run out of bullets." But labeling a rifle an assault weapon because it has a metal clip where one might potentially mount a bayonet is "circular reasoning," Cooper wrote.

One significant problem with the particulars of legal definitions, said John Sweeney of DelawareOnline.com, is that gun manufacturers easily slipped through the loopholes in the AWB by removing any features that defined a rifle as an assault weapon.

"The definition of the assault weapon in that [AWB] legislation had so many extras ? bayonet mount, for example ? that simply by making a few superficial changes, the basic AR-15 [semiautomatic rifle] was no longer an assault weapon," Sweeney wrote.

As flawed as the AWB definition of assault weapons may be, the wording has found its way into many state codes, including that of Connecticut, site of the December Newtown school shootings. "The AR-15 that [shooter] Adam Lanza used was a legal weapon under Connecticut law," wrote Sweeney.?

Another point of contention in the gun control debate is the use of magazine clips that hold ammunition. The Connecticut definition of "assault weapon" includes semiautomatic pistols with "an ammunition magazine that attaches to the pistol outside of the pistol grip." While many states have no such restrictions on magazine clips, other states place a limit on the number of rounds a weapon's magazine can hold. (States can create their own definitions of what makes an assault weapon, but that definition can't be weaker than the federal one.)

Despite the vagaries of state and federal laws, there is some common ground among gun rights' activists and gun control advocates. Fully automatic weapons like machine guns, which continue to fire bullets as long as the trigger is pulled, are legal to own but are tightly regulated by the federal government, according to Slate.com. Many states have regulations that are stricter, or have outright bans on automatic weapons.

It's the definition of semiautomatic weapons, which fire a bullet each time the trigger is pulled, that sets off sparks in the gun control debate. Most firearms available today, including small handguns, rifles and pistols, are semiautomatic, according to Slate.com.

The FN Five-seven handgun that was used in the 2009 shootings at Fort Hood, Texas, was a semiautomatic weapon capable of shooting 20 rounds in just 5.3 seconds. And the Glock 19 that Jared Loughner used to shoot Gabrielle Giffords and kill six people in Tucson, Ariz., in 2011 was a semiautomatic handgun, reports Slate.com.

Both of those handguns, however, were perfectly legal even under the AWB, which expired in 2004.

Injured In A Car Accident? Get A Qualified Attorney

Auto accidents can result in severe injuries or even death, and U.S. statistics show that every 14 seconds an auto accident occurs and every 12 minutes a person dies either as a driver or a passenger in a vehicle accident. The most important statistic concerning auto accidents though is that one-third of those will suffer the rest of their lives because of the injuries that they incurred from that one unfortunate moment.

If you or someone in your family has been in an automobile accident, the second person they should contact is a car accident attorney. The first place you should go is to your family doctor or the emergency room to be examined by a physician and treated. This is vitally important because some injuries do not appear on the victim for up to 48 hours, and the physician will document the exam, which your attorney will then use.

Car accident attorneys, personal Injury lawyers and wrongful death attorneys can work to win the highest settlement for their clients. Almost 10 percent of the driving population does not carry insurance, so if you are in a serious accident and the other party has no insurance, you will need expert legal help. Personal injury attorneys also handle medical malpractice, nursing home mistreatment, slips and falls, injuries while at work or resulting from defective machines and wrongful deaths.

Injury attorneys are specialized in courtroom legal arguments, and they are experienced in recovering the damages for each victim involved. A serious auto accident affects the victim physically, mentally and emotionally, and these injuries sometimes require months of medical attention and recovery time.

If you have experienced an incompetent lawyer who abandoned the case and left you struggling on your own, you could be somewhat apprehensive about contacting a competent lawyer, but they are out there for you. Using the steps below, you can find an expert accident attorney that will have the necessary skills to assist you with your case.

Five tips in finding a professional injury lawyer or a car accident attorney are

1. After an accident, don?t procrastinate. It is recommended that you contact a personal injury or auto accident attorney as soon as possible, so you have professionals on your side.

2. Select a quality attorney by scheduling a free consultation. Personal injury lawyers should offer one, and if they don?t, don?t consider using them. Select a law firm that has experience in courtroom trials by checking their win/loss record. The initial consultation allows you and the attorney to meet each other professionally and discuss the details of the case.

3. Save your medical report and any other important documents and photos, and bring them to the consultation.

4. Have any passengers in the vehicle be examined for injuries.

5. Only secure an attorney that takes a payment when they win the case. If they loose, then the client owes nothing.

Speedtest.net app finally comes to Windows Phone

What's the go-to app for testing internet data speeds on mobile devices? Undoubtedly Speedtest.net is one of the most obvious answers coming from Android and iOS users, but not from those rocking Windows Phone 8. For some time, Ookla, the company behind the app, has turned a blind eye to Microsoft's smartphone operating system but, starting Monday, Speedtest.net is finally available for those who prefer tiles to icon grids.

As you may expect, the app carries over much of the existing functionality from its Android and iOS siblings but, unlike them, Speedtest.net for Windows Phone 8 is dressed up in a much nicer looking package. The app displays ping (latency in miliseconds) as well as the internet connection download and upload speeds. Per the usual tradition, it continues to display the speedometer with the live indicator in the foreground.

Speedtest.net also provides an internet speed testing history containing previous results and adjacent time-stamps. Users can have the app connect to a preferred server, as well as set it to display the speed in different formats (including the more intuitive Mbps). The app can also show the internal as well as external IP address, and use the user's location to select the appropriate server for testing.

Although Speedtest.net lists under requirements the WXGA (1280 by 768) resolution (among the 1280 by 720 and 800 by 480 ones), users have reported that the app does not work at the moment on the AT&T variant of the Nokia Lumia 920. On other carriers the issue appears to be non-existent.

Speedtest.net is available to download from the Windows Phone Store.

AusTex Oil Limited (ASX:AOK) Vertical Well Development Program at Snake River Continues

Sydney, Jan 15, 2013 (ABN Newswire) - United States mid-continent focused oil & gas producer AusTex Oil Limited (ASX:AOK) (OTCQX:ATXDY) is pleased to update shareholders on its vertical well drilling program at the Company's 100% owned Snake River Project in Northern Oklahoma.

Read #20-8 Well reaches TD

Drilling operations on the Read #20-8 vertical well successfully reached TD at 4,730 feet over the weekend. Continuing the regional trend, the well intersected 355 gross feet of the target Mississippi Lime interval including 30 feet of chat with 8-16% porosity with additional porosity streaks logged in the solid with oil wet samples captured.

Logs and samples indicate the presence of hydrocarbons in additional intervals including the Woodford Shale and the Skinner and Cleveland Sands. Casing has been run and cement set with the well to be completed for oil and gas production.

AusTex's Managing Director, Daniel Lanskey commented:
"As reported last week, the Read #20-8 represents the 16th vertical well drilled at the Snake River project, and these initial results confirm that our aggressive vertical well development strategy is yielding excellent outcomes.

"We have now drilled two vertical wells in the month January and the Drilling Contractor is scheduled to commence drilling two new locations from early February. Our focus for the remainder of January is on development activities to ensure additional vertical wells enter production as soon as possible."

Mr. Lanskey added that investment in the Mississippi Lime play was increasing significantly, with many operators focusing on liquid rich targets in Northern Oklahoma.

"Interest in the Mississippi Lime play is attracting major players, with Repsol, Shell, and Apache Corporation entering the play in the last 12 months. This clearly vindicates our earlier decision to focus on the Mississippi Lime play in which we now hold approximately 23,000 net acres.

"Our focus for the last year has been developing the Snake River Project in Northern Oklahoma which is located in Kay County, east of the Nemaha Ridge. In the immediate area surrounding our acreage, drilling activity has increased substantially with Range Resources (NYSE:RRC) now reporting 5 active rigs in the adjacent leases.
"We have participated in 2 horizontal wells with Range and have more to follow. To our north, Triple Diamond has reported success with their Hofmeister 21-1 Horizontal Well and other operators are successfully developing wells to our east.

The southern edge of Snake River borders on the Noble County line with a number of operators including Redfork Energy (ASX:RFE) reporting drilling success.

"Well data from our own wells confirm the consistent thickness of the reservoir and production results demonstrate a high oil ratio in the region. We will continue to drill two new vertical wells a month at Snake River and are focused on continuing to grow our oil and gas production as new wells are completed."

Vanderbilt University wants full tax-exempt status for frat houses

Monday, January 14, 2013 at 2:58pm

Vanderbilt University is turning to Davidson County Chancery Court to bring 11 fraternity houses under a 100 percent tax-exempt status after being denied by Metro and the state.

Vanderbilt frat houses currently receive a 50 percent tax-exempt status based on a 1968 Chancery Court decree, according to the court filings. But the university has argued that the frat parcels ? which are now fully owned and operated by the school ? should have the same tax-free status as dormitories.

After having their appeal denied by the state?s Assessment Appeals Commission, Vanderbilt filed suit in Chancery Court on Jan. 11 in order to get a judicial review of the case.

Vanderbilt, whose operating budget is $3.7 billion in 2013, will owe roughly $74,000 in combined property tax for the 11 frat house parcels this year, according to public records.

Vanderbilt argues in the filings that frat houses are used in the same way as other student housing facilities on campus: ?to sleep, eat, hold meetings related to university and student activities, to tutor, to participate in educational programs ... and generally to engage in life?s daily activities such as socializing and interacting with fellow students, playing games, watching television and partying,? the suit reads.

The university points to two state laws that allow tax exempt status for dormitories and facilities that are used exclusively for ?carrying out thereupon one or more of the purposes for which the institution was created or exists.?

Vanderbilt is asking for the tax-free status after a lease agreement with the Greek organizations was changed, therefore bringing the houses under the full control of the university. Court filings indicate that the tax assessor believed the agreement was a change ?primarily in name only? while Vanderbilt called it a ?sea change.?

The Assessment Appeals Commission, under the State Board of Equalization, ruled that the frat houses weren?t ?directly incidental? to Vanderbilt?s educational purposes.

?Fraternities afford their members a unique life experience that is valuable to their members, but these worthwhile social and personal experiences are distinct from the education Vanderbilt provides to its students,? the final order, filed in August 2012, reads.

Chancellor Russell Perkins is handling the case.

(AP) ? "Zero Dark Thirty" hunted down the top spot at the box office ? and easily won it.

Sony Pictures' Osama bin Laden raid drama nabbed first place with $24 million in its first weekend in wide release, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The film, which opened in a limited run last month, earned five Oscar nominations last week, including best picture, original screenplay and actress for Jessica Chastain as a dogged CIA operative.

Open Road Films' horror parody "A Haunted House" starring Marlon Wayans debuted in second place with a solid $18.8 million. The Warner Bros. mobster drama "Gangster Squad," starring Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling as off-the-books police officers battling a mob boss played by Sean Penn, opened below expectations in third place with $16.7 million.

After earning Oscar nominations last week, several Academy Awards contenders benefited at the box office. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences moved up the unveiling of the Oscar nominations to Thursday, three days ahead of Sunday's Golden Globes, Hollywood's second-biggest awards ceremony organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

"The timing is great because there are a host of these awards contenders still out there," said Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst at Hollywood.com. "'Django Unchained,' 'Les Miserables,' 'Lincoln,' 'Silver Linings Playbook' and a few others are still out there. Which movies win tonight at the Golden Globes will definitely receive a boost going forward."

At the Golden Globes, "Zero Dark Thirty" will be up against "Argo," ''Django Unchained," ''Life of Pi" and "Lincoln" in the best motion picture drama category. It's also competing against those films for the best picture prize at the Oscars ceremony on Feb. 24, as well as "Amour," ''Beasts of the Southern Wild," ''Les Miserables" and "Silver Linings Playbook."

Controversies surrounding "Zero Dark Thirty," which depicts waterboarding and other harsh interrogation methods, may have helped create buzz for the film. Several lawmakers accused the CIA of misleading "Zero Dark Thirty" filmmakers by allegedly telling them such interrogation methods helped track down terrorist mastermind bin Laden in 2011.

"There are so many facets of 'Zero Dark Thirty' that have created interest in it," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution at Sony. "Ultimately, it's a great film. That's the piece that you really need to have to get this great of a result. I think it's a film that's not only going to do well in the marketplace but also be talked about for years to come."

The weekend's third place finisher, "Gangster Squad," similarly attracted controversy last year after the mass shooting at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater left 12 dead. Warner Bros. pulled the movie's trailer and delayed the release out of sensitivity because the film originally featured a scene with mobsters ruthlessly shooting into a movie theater audience.

The entire sequence featuring Brolin's character being ambushed inside famed Hollywood movie palace Grauman's Chinese Theater was removed from "Gangster Squad" and replaced with a new scene, which cost millions of dollars to reshoot, set in Los Angeles' Chinatown neighborhood. The rest of the film's many bullet-ridden Tommy gun battles remained intact.

"There's nothing that indicates violence was an issue," said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. general sales manager. "I don't think that's the case here. The exit polling tells us that people liked what they saw in 'Gangster Squad.' I think we'll have a nice hold going into the holiday weekend where people will be more available and have more leisure time."

Overall business this weekend came in at $142 million, up more than 7 percent from the same period last year, when the Mark Wahlberg thriller "Contraband" led the box office with $24.3 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com. It marks the third strong weekend for Hollywood after seven consecutive weekends when business was down over last year.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
