Michael Jackson doctor files appeal notice in LA

(AP) ? The doctor sentenced to four years in prison for causing Michael Jackson's death has filed a notice that he intends to appeal the conviction.

Conrad Murray signed the notice that was filed in Los Angeles on Friday seeking all records and transcripts from the case. The filing does not indicate the basis on which Murray will argue to overturn his conviction or sentence.

Murray was sentenced Tuesday for his involuntary manslaughter conviction, but the term will be automatically cut in half.

Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor criticized Murray's conduct, calling him a disgrace to the medical profession.

Murray's challenge would be heard by a state appeals court in Los Angeles.

TUF 14 openers: Delorme surprises Ferguson with rapid third-round finish, Albert and Siler also winners

TUF 14 openers: Delorme surprises Ferguson with rapid third-round finish, Albert and Siler also winners

LAS VEGAS - Roland Delorme has some pretty nasty jiu-jitsu. It took a while to pay off, but when Josh Ferguson got rocked in the third, Delorme ran roughshod over him. He got the finish at 0:22 of the final round via rear-naked choke in fight No. 3 of the night on the Season 14 "Ultimate Fighter" undercard.

Ferguson, a strong puncher, had a lot of steam taken away in the first when Delorme caught him in a triangle choke predicament. The 5-foot-5 Ferguson used a lot of energy to avoid tapping out as he struggled for nearly two minutes. The second round was basically even with Ferguson scoring a takedown and neither fighter landing any of significance on the feet.

The third opened with Ferguson moving forward and getting caught with a jab. It didn't look like much but Ferguson went down and looked stunned. He jumped forward from his knees to try and grab Delorme's leg. The Canadian threw him to the side and jumped on his back. In a split second, he turned it over, locked on the choke and trapped Ferguson's right arm. He was helpless in the choke and had to tap.

Siler uses thai clinch to bust up Clopton

Steven Siler had a height advantage and he used it tonight against Josh Clopton.

Giving away four inches, Clopton could not stay out of or free himself from Siler's constant efforts to lock on a thai clinch. Siler's big knees allowed him to crush Clopton's nose, get the blood flowing and score with the judges on his way to a unanimous decision win, 29-28 on all three scorecards in fight No. 2 of the night at the TUF 14 Finale.

Siler's fighting style? isn't pretty, but he likes to brawl. His size was simply too much for the diminutive Clopton. You don't often see high level fighters dominated for minutes at a time in the thai clinch (in standing position, hands locked together behind the opponent's head), but that's exactly what happened to Clopton. He blocked a lot of the knees coming from Siler, but way too many got through.

By the middle of the second, Clopton's face was a bloody mess and he was having trouble breathing.

It was an accomplishment just to make it to the TUF 14 Finale for Siler. He was matched up in the featherweight Round of 16 against Micah Miller, one of the pre-show favorites. Siler (19-9, 1-0 UFC) pulled the massive upset and went on to lose to eventual finalist Diego Brandao in just 30 seconds in the next round.

Brimage lands heavier shots in decision win over Bass

Marcus Brimage can slug with the best of them so he was a little surprised Stephen Bass chose to duke it out. Bass didn't leave on a stretcher, but he didn't land enough to counter the nasty kicking game of Brimage. Brimage scored a unanimous decision victory, 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.

Brimage found a home for left hand throughout the fight, but never landed one that would knock Bass down. His biggest shots came on inside leg kicks. Several of them whipped Bass' leg into the air. One outside leg kick actually dropped Bass in the second.

TUF 14 openers: Delorme surprises Ferguson with rapid third-round finish, Albert and Siler also winners

Albert runs through Pague with quick first-round TKO

John Albert and Dustin Pague went for broke from the opening seconds. Albert landed the first big shot and it spelled doom for Pague.

Albert forced referee Herb Dean to save Pague after he landed seven unanswered rapid fire shots to the downed fighter at the 1:22 mark of the first round.

Pague, one of the strongest strikers on the show, wanted to slug it out and Albert, who's more of a ground specialist, stood with him. An Albert left stunned Pague and a right hook buckled his legs then dropped him. On the ground, Albert showed some brilliance by securing Pague's right arm and trapping it across face. With his free right hand, Albert pounded away. When Dean saved Pague he turned to trying to fight the ref. His head had clearly been scrambled in taking dozens of shots to the arm and dome.

Caraway abuses Neace on the ground for choke victory

Bryan Caraway still has to overcome that confidence bugaboo, but when he's feeling good and on his game, he's a pretty tough fighter at featherweight.

The Team Alpha Male camper opened tonight's card with an easy win over Dustin Neace.

In the first and second, Caraway settled down by trading hands with Neace. As soon as he decided it was time to go to the ground, it did.

Caraway (16-5, 1-0 UFC) scored a double-leg with 2:45 left in the first and controlled Neace on the mat for the remainder of the round. With 2:33 left, he did the same in second. This time, Caraway quickly transitioned to take Neace's back. Caraway slapped on the rear-naked and it took about four seconds for Neace to bail on the fight and submit.

This wasn't Caraway's Zuffa debut. He fought twice for the WEC losing to Fredson Paixao and Mark Hominick. His only other losses have come against solid featherweights like Wilson Reis, Ian Loveland and John Gunderson.

House panel votes to subpoena Corzine on MF Global (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A congressional panel has subpoenaed former Sen. Jon Corzine to testify next week about his role leading MF Global, a brokerage firm that collapsed this fall after a disastrous bet on European debt.

The Dec. 8 hearing will be a rare moment in Washington. Congressional historians and Capitol Hill insiders can't recall another time when a former member of Congress was summoned by his former peers to testify about a matter under federal investigation.

The House Agriculture Committee voted Friday to issue the subpoena after Corzine failed to reply to an informal request to appear at the hearing.

Chairman Rep. Frank Lucas, R-Okla., said his testimony is "essential to fulfill our objectives."

A spokesman for Corzine declined to comment.

MF Global filed for bankruptcy protection on Oct. 31. Corzine resigned as chairman and CEO a few days later. In just a week, stock investors lost an estimated $585 million.

Corzine has also been asked to testify later this month before two other panels, including the Senate Agriculture Committee. In that case, Corzine could face tough questions from former Senate colleagues.

Corzine, a Democrat, represented New Jersey in the U.S. Senate from 2001 to 2005. For two of those years, he led the committee that raised campaign money for Democrats seeking election to the Senate. He later served one term as New Jersey's governor before moving on to lead MF Global. He was also CEO of Goldman Sachs from 1994 to 1999.

Corzine has few goods options now that the committee has issued a subpoena. By law, he must appear at the hearing. Otherwise, he could be held in contempt of Congress and go to prison.

He could refuse at the hearing to answer their questions, invoking his Fifth Amendment right. That could diminish his credibility.

Still, if he cooperates with lawmakers, he could provide information that might come back to hurt him in criminal and civil investigations.

Corzine "is being whipsawed between the congressional subpoena and the looming criminal investigation," said Robert Mintz, a former federal prosecutor in New Jersey who heads the white-collar defense practice at McCarter & English in Newark.

"It's a unique situation that Jon's in," said Abbe Lowell, a defense attorney who was counsel to the House of Representatives and whose clients have included former Sen. John Edwards and former Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons.

Regulators are looking into whether MF Global used money from customers' accounts for its own purposes as its financial condition worsened. That would violate securities rules. The FBI is investigating whether the firm violated any criminal laws.

An estimated $1.2 billion or more may be missing from customer accounts. Regulators say MF Global moved money out of customer accounts within days as the firm's cash dried up.

MF Global was one of the biggest players in the derivatives market. Derivatives are investments that are based on the value of an underlying asset, such as interest rates or oil prices.

No one at MF Global has been charged with a crime or civil violation.

NATO says 3 troops killed in eastern Afghanistan

(AP) ? A roadside bombing killed three NATO service members Saturday in eastern Afghanistan, the U.S.-led coalition said.

The coalition recently shifted its focus from southern Afghanistan to the east, where militants are fighting Afghan and coalition troops along the long, porous border with Pakistan.

The exact location of the bombing was not disclosed, nor were the nationalities of the dead.

So far this year, 519 NATO service members have been killed in Afghanistan, including at least 389 Americans.

Separately, tribal elders in Logar province, also in the east, continued to negotiate with insurgents on Saturday in an effort to free eight Pakistani laborers kidnapped by militants on Thursday, said provincial spokesman Din Mohammad Darwesh.

He said they were kidnapped by a gunman on a motorcycle who ambushed a bus carrying the laborers to work at a hospital construction site in Pul-e-Alam, the provincial capital. The assailants took them into the woods at gunpoint.

China military condemns US-Australia military pact (AP)

BEIJING ? America's strengthened military pact with Australia is a figment of "Cold War thinking" that will destabilize the Asia-Pacific region, China's Defense Ministry said Wednesday, in Beijing's strongest criticism yet of a move widely seen as intended to counter China's rising assertiveness.

Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng's comments at a monthly news conference came short of the scathing attacks on the agreement from China's nationalist press and outspoken academics.

However, they reflected a harsher tone from the armed forces, whose expanding budget and reach have rattled many of China's neighbors and prompted them to seek strengthened alliances with the region's dominant military power, America.

"Military alliances were created by history. We think that all moves to strengthen and expand military alliances are a product of Cold War thinking that run counter to the era's trend of peace, development and cooperation," Geng said.

Despite that criticism, Geng said Chinese and U.S. defense officials will still meet for consultations Dec. 7. Gen. Ma Xiaotian, the People's Liberation Army's deputy chief of staff, and U.S. Defense Undersecretary Michele Flournoy will be co-chairs.

Ma will then go to New Delhi for China-India defense and security consultations on Dec. 9, Geng said.

The U.S.-Australia agreement, announced during a November visit by President Barack Obama to Australia, will send military aircraft and up to 2,500 Marines to northern Australia for a training hub to help allies and protect American interests across Asia.

Beijing's previous official responses, issued by its Foreign Ministry, were a mild questioning of its appropriateness.

Chinese hardliners have called recent U.S. moves in Asia, including strengthened military ties with allies Japan and the Philippines as well as former enemy Vietnam, a new U.S. containment policy that must be resisted through more active diplomacy.
