Cold weather, hot fights: The top five bouts of January

Happy January, Cagereaders. It's a new year, which means we have a fresh slate of fights to discuss, dissect, predict and then finally enjoy. Here are Cagewriter's top five. Which ones are you most excited about? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Michael Chandler vs. Rick Hawn on Jan. 17: Bellator's move to Spike TV is starting with a bang. Lightweight champion Chandler will defend his belt for the first time (his bout with Akihiro Gono was a non-title bout.) He'll have to face Hawn, an Olympian in judo who won his last three fights with two knockouts and a decision.

Pat Curran vs. Patricio Freire on Jan. 17: On the same night, Curran will put his featherweight title against Freire, a frightening striker who has been waiting for Curran since May.

Vitor Belfort vs. Michael Bisping on January 19: The UFC on FX card will be headlined by a fight that could decide Anderson Silva's next challenger. Even without title implications hanging over it, Belfort taking on Bisping in Brazil is just a fun fight.

Donald Cerrone vs. Anthony Pettis on January 26: Fighters don't have to dislike each other for a good fight to happen, but it does make it a whole lot of fun. Pettis and Cerrone have been jawing at each other for months, and they finally get to settle their score at the UFC's next Fox card. Bonus: They're both thrilling strikers who seem incapable of boring fights.

Demetrious Johnson vs. John Dodson on January 26: For the main event of UFC on Fox 6, Johnson will get his first chance to defend the UFC's flyweight belt. It will be speed vs. speed in the cage, which is both fun and exhausting to watch.

Setting Health and Fitness Goals for 2013 - Build Muscle and Lose Fat

Set Goals

New Year Resolutions ? there, I said it.

The most common New Year?s resolution is to lose weight, but you might have noticed in years past that declaring a commitment to this end rarely results in a comprehensive plan that will actually help you to reach your goal. Perhaps you sign up for a diet program and even attend a few meetings before getting too busy to go. Or maybe you join a gym and shell out major money for access to equipment that you never end up using.

Whatever you have done in the past, you can make 2013 the year you turn it all around.

The trick, in many cases, is not to put such an emphasis on the number you see on the scale, but rather to address your health and fitness in a way that provides you with other forms of success. So here are just a few things to consider when setting your goals for the coming year.

First and foremost, forget about weight!

Okay, so there is a lot of hubbub circulating about the obesity rate amongst adults and the concurrent rise in heart disease, diabetes, and more. But these aren?t necessarily a byproduct of your weight so much as your lifestyle.

What you really need to address is not the readout on the scale, but rather the bad habits that brought you to this pass.

Choose Healthier Foods

When you become aware of the things you?re doing (or not doing) that contribute to weight gain or a general lack of physical fitness you?ll no doubt find that it?s far easier to recognize areas that you can improve, as well as making the changes necessary to actually achieve the weight loss you?ve long dreamed of. Eating the right foods will help make your body a metabolic machine and your bones, muscles, and organs will be healthier for your efforts.

Fruits, vegetables, lean meats, whole grains, and low fat dairy should be the staples of your diet. Dairy is optional, but for those who can tolerate it, dairy provides an extra boost of calcium and casein protein.

Eat in Moderation

Weight gain is not only tied to what you eat, but how much you consume. So even if you decided to eat all of the same foods, using a smaller plate or taking only one serving at meal times could result in weight loss.

If you opt to eat a healthy, nutritious, and balanced diet, as well, there?s no telling what kind of difference you could make in the way you look and feel. All it takes is 10-12 weeks to see real results from a healthy, low calorie diet.

Fitness is Still an Important Piece of the Puzzle

Of course, fitness is a product of both diet and exercise. For many people, forced activity is seen as undesirable. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to make physical fitness fun instead of turning it into a chore.

You?ll want to start by finding an activity you enjoy, whether it?s taking your dog on long walks, hiking or biking local trails, signing up for a variety of new classes (Zumba, Pilates, spinning, lifting, etc.), or falling back on old faves like jogging or swimming. Once you?ve got a few exercise routines that you can look forward to, it?s just a matter of scheduling them in.

You might not think all of this planning is necessary, but take a moment to consider how well your strategy of winging it has worked in the past. Use a calendar or planner to keep track of important events, meetings, appointments, and to schedule blocks of your favorite exercise.

Do it Different From Last Year

Only a fool does the same thing over and over and expects different results, so pen an exercise schedule and stick to it just like you would the meetings or events you regularly add to your calendar. Whatever you tried to do last New Year, don?t do it again unless it worked. If you bought a gym membership, trained for a month, then quit ? don?t do that again!

  • Join a class.
  • Make new workout friends.
  • Find a training partner.
  • Try a new sport.

Don?t forget that a lack of exercise equipment doesn?t preclude you from working out. If you can?t afford a gym membership or home equipment, grab some friends and head to the park for a pickup game on Saturday afternoon.

We can all have a great time, boost our health and fitness in the process, and get one step closer to reaching our goals in 2013.

Time To Make Fun A Priority ? Empowering Your Mind

Recently, Jeff and I set aside a day for fun in nearby Prescott, AZ. It?s a mile-high town in the mountains that offers more services, events and shopping than our local valley.

First, we went to see ?Rise of the Guardians,? a wonderful animated movie about the Earth guardians of St. Nick, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and the Sandman. Jack Frost is added to the guardians in response to a threat from the Boogey Man, who thrives on fear. The Guardians must protect children from losing faith, or else fear takes over.

It?s a great metaphor for what we all deal with ? belief and fear. During a climax, a child in the audience said, ?No.? It showed how enthralling the action was. At the end of the movie, people applauded, which I don?t hear very often after a motion picture.

After the movie, we went to see the world?s largest Gingerbread Village at Prescott Resort and Conference Center.

There were over 100 gingerbread houses, castles, buildings and even an amusement park.

Local individuals, schools and businesses create these structures for this display.

From there we did some shopping. Then, after dark, we drove through the Valley of Lights display.

These are millions of lights in over 30 static and animated displays of the 12 Days of Christmas, candles, poinsettias, Santa, elves, the outline of an old west town, and many more.

We had a full day. It reinforced the idea that every so often, we need to take a day off to just have fun. If we don?t, our creativity dries up and we tend to feel stuck. It?s just as important to take time away from work as it is to be productive.

When we step away and change the rhythm, we fill the well of our resources, creativity and energy. We need to remember that, and make it a priority in the year to come.

Judge rejects part of Apple App Store suit vs Amazon

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A U.S. judge on Wednesday rejected part of Apple Inc's lawsuit against Amazon.com Inc's use of the term App Store, ruling Apple cannot bring a false advertising claim against the online retailer.

U.S. District Judge Phyllis Hamilton in Oakland, California, granted Amazon's motion for partial summary judgment, which only challenged Apple's false advertising allegations. Apple leveled other claims against Amazon, including trademark infringement.

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment, and an Amazon representative could not be reached immediately.

Amazon has stepped up competition against Apple in recent years, launching its cheaper Kindle tablet computer to go after the dominant iPad and trying to lure mobile application developers to its Kindle platform.

One of the first public clashes in their tussle was Apple's 2011 lawsuit.

Apple accused Amazon of misusing what it calls its APP STORE to solicit developers for a mobile software download service. However, Amazon said its so-called Appstore has become so generic that its use could not constitute false advertising.

In a legal filing last year, Amazon added that even Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook and his predecessor, Steve Jobs, used the term to discuss rivals. Cook commented on "the number of app stores out there" and Jobs referred to the "four app stores on Android."

In her ruling on Wednesday, Hamilton wrote that the mere use of "Appstore" by Amazon cannot be taken as a representation that its service is the same as Apple's.

"Apple has failed to establish that Amazon made any false statement (express or implied) of fact that actually deceived or had the tendency to deceive a substantial segment of its audience," Hamilton wrote.

A trial on Apple's remaining claims is scheduled for August.

The case is Apple Inc v. Amazon.com Inc et al, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 11-01327.
