MONROE, N.C. -- The Union County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting.
Authorities say Brent Catoe, 49, ran into a wooded area Thursday night after deputies arrived at a home on Wolf Pond Road to serve a warrant for an assault from a domestic dispute earlier in the day.
The sheriff's office said he was later shot by officers in a K9 unit when he refused to drop a weapon and pointed it at the officers.
"That's what they're trained to do is to protect themselves and the lives of others when they're placed in deadly force situations like that," said Capt. Macky Goodman with the Union County Sheriff's Office.
"It's a tragedy for everyone involved,? said Naomi Herndon, executive director of the Turning Point domestic violence shelter.
She wants the public to know the variety of resources available for individuals suffering with domestic violence. She said, in this case specifically, their court advocate program could have made a significant difference.
"When victims choose to file a protective order, our advocate will help them with that. They will help them fill out the paperwork, go to court with them and also arrange escort to and from court if they feel like their safety is in jeopardy," she said.
The officers involved are on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure as authorities investigate the case.

Moody's Investors Service has downgraded Halliburton's debt rating from stable to negative.
Although Halliburton Co. (NYSE: HAL) has made progress in settling some of the uncertainty related to its role in the Deepwater Horizon disaster, a share buyback deal has lead analysts at Moody?s Investors Service in New York to downgrade the company?s debt outlook to negative.
The rating followed news on Friday of the Houston oilfield services giant?s plan to buy back up to $3.3 billion of its own stock, and that Halliburton had pleaded guilty to destroying evidence in the 2010 oil spill disaster.
"The negative outlook reflects Halliburton's more aggressive financial posture evidenced by debt funded common stock repurchase activity and a higher anticipated leverage profile," said Moody?s vice president and senior analyst Michael Somogyi in a statement.
Nonetheless, at Morningstar Inc. in Chicago, analysts had a different take on the buyback ? and the markets reacted positively to the news, pushing Halliburton shares up more than 4 percent to $46 in late-afternoon trading Friday.
?We see the buyback as an attractive use of capital,? analyst Stephen Ellis said in an investors note. ?In addition, we believe the buyback illustrates Halliburton's confidence in the stability of its business going forward.?
Both analysts said there is work that remains before the Deepwater Horizon uncertainty will conclude.
"While the company has made progress in defining its liability exposure related to Macondo, there is still uncertainty surrounding the settlement of private claims stemming from the Macondo multi-district litigation," Somogyi said.

TOKYO (AP) ? Apple Inc. has applied for a trademark in Japan for "iWatch," indicating it may be proceeding with rumored plans to produce a smart wristwatch.
A document obtained Monday from the Japan Patent Office's website said the application was made June 3 and made public June 27.
It was not immediately clear when the application might be approved. Patent office and Apple officials in Japan were not available for comment late Monday.
Apple is rumored to be working on a smart watch that would run on a version of the operating system used by its iPhone and iPad. The company has not confirmed those rumors, but CEO Tim Cook has hinted that it may be developing a wearable computing device such as a wristwatch.
