Huge exercise difference, kids vs. adults, health and fitness pros ...

Today, December 30, 2012 the Engineers preparing next year?s Adult Exercise Efficiency Scoring Project, released a nine hundred word report covering how the efficiency, of eventually 200 popular muscle and cardio building exercises, will be measured, scored and reported for adults.

They also explained why they believe it could take years before learning how to accurately rate Exercise Efficiency, for the still growing bodies of children.

Here is today?s statement, exactly as provided to examiner.com:

The energy tracing methods used by engineers to evaluate building plans, when applied instead to the human body, expose how riding a bicycle, while holding the same heart rate, for the same amount of time, as running, allows the adult?s core running muscles to exert up to 4-5 times more force than is possible to exert while running, with far less pain and skeletal damage.

In other words, in the same amount of time, doing the same amount of cardio exercise, riding a bike will build far more core and leg running strength for the average adult, than running physically can.

The structural factor for noticing this huge increase in adult Exercise Efficiency, is that while sitting on the bike, the leg joints are not also hosting battles between falling body weight and External Motion Resistance (from gravity), simply because the bike supports their body weight instead of their leg joints.

By not allowing hundreds of g-force pounds to simultaneously smash leg joints the bike rider?s leg joints are free to fight immensely more running muscle exertion, they are not first deeply compressed by falling body weight.

This is one of countless examples that Exercise Efficiency not only exists exists, but that as far as for cardio exercise, the heart can work just as hard from either skeletal stress or muscles demanding more oxygen.

As far as adults go, using Skeletal Based cardio is inefficient as they don?t need to work anything harder than muscles, but all popular cardio exercises methods stress both joints and muscles.

The heart will pound from either joint or muscle stress.

For instance, if you have someone clamp your hands in iron claim, hard enough to cause enough deep skeletal stress, you can hold a targeted heart rate, which dose not make an iron clamp an efficient cardio exercise machine.

Cycling compared to running is a most common example of far less skeletal involvement, for the same amount of cardio effort.

So far, humans have only mastered the types of high exertion exercises that work best for healthy children, as their still growing joints and spinal discs, can be farther strengthened this way.

In the year 2000, out of necessity, we began using engineering research science to trace the forces of physical exercises, through the human body.

One of the first discoveries this revealed, was that almost every muscle or cardio strengthening method children and adults are taught, works (stresses) the moving parts of their skeletons (joints and spinal discs), four to twenty times harder than the muscles the method targets (that is once these muscles have become conditioned to doing the exercise).

Force Mapping reveals that ?Skeletal Based? exercises, are not only almost the only type of muscle or cardio exercises (wet or dry) Health and fitness experts have ever taught, but that they can be extremely empowering for healthy children.

This is because their still growing skeletons develop even stronger joints and spinal discs, to better handle high compression exercises preformed regularly.

However, between ages 18 -23, human skeletons harden into adulthood, and then the joint and disc building up process starts slowing down. At this age continuing the same Skeletal Based exercise cycle every few days, they did in high school, no longer provides their moving skeletal parts enough time to even fully recover before the next high compression exercise session blasts them again.

As average adult grows older, the time and ability for their joints and discs to fully recover continues to extend, and even become unattainable, by continued use of the same exercises that once empowered them as children.

So instead of adult joints and discs also growing stronger after each joint blasting workout, they start wearing out, so the exact same amount of exertion becomes continually more painful and damaging for the average adult to even do, and so less then 4% of adults even stay in shape.

This huge, but still unrealized difference between children and adults by America?s health and fitness experts, makes rating Exercise Efficiency for average adults, seniors and even mobility disabled adults, rather easy to score.

Because adults no longer need joint or disc smashing during exercises, their Exercise Efficiency is simply the percentage of all External Motion Resistance Energy, from any muscle or cardio exercise, that only opposes their muscle contractions. If all of it only opposes contractions, than it?s Adult Exercise Efficiency Score will be 100%, but only for adults.

However, because a 100% exercise for adults, cannot not maximize the strength of the growing joints and discs in children, this exercise could be far less than 50% for them.

Exercise Efficiency is simple for adults because their joints and discs no longer benefit from exercise methods that crush them, so any resistance that dissipates from joint and disc compression, is totally wasted for adults, and harming the long term health and fitness of adult joints and discs.

Unfortunately, an Exercise Efficiency for children, is as hard to determine as it is easy to for adults. Beyond the fact that their softer growing joints and discs can be farther strengthened by compression, Exercise Efficiency for children becomes an issue of determining how much skeletal based exercise is the right amount, and we have found too many factors that apply.

Every time we tried to get a handle on scoring Exercise Efficiency for children we found more questions than answers. We can say with 100% certainty that Exercise Efficiency for growing bodies even varies from one child to the next, based on factors that are not involved with scoring Adult Exercise Efficiency.

For example, a child with low bone density or mass, may suffer far more pain and skeletal damage than a child with high bone density. We found that other factors, like how straight their extremity bones and joints are, and even how large the child?s feet and hands are, can vary the efficiency of same Skeletal Based exercise from one child to another.

Since adults gain no skeletal benefit from smashing their joints and spinal discs during exercise, high Exercise Efficiency is most simply achieved by preventing the External Motion Resistance Energy from fighting other forces inside joints and discs, as children need these battles in varying amounts based on individual factors.

So until all of these factors are identified, and then made measurable, we do not believe that accurately predicting Exercise Efficiency Scores for children is not possible. This is the reason why this project is, and should only be considered relatively accurate (5% either way) for people over 22, and why it should not be even considered for creating workouts for healthy children.

Because the contributor of these articles is also heavily involved with this exercise efficiency project, expect examiner.com news, to release a review for each exercise method and it?s score. These reviews are also expected to, include illustrations and or animations depicting the exercise forces of each exercise method, as each are posted.

Possibly the most important aspect of this project, is pointing out ways to redirect some to all of the External Motion Resistance Energy of modern exercise methods and workout machines, directly against muscle contractions, before their energy can cause joint and spinal compression.

That concludes their report.

Starting the second week of January, you will also be able to see these scores at examiner.com, by entering ?Exercise Efficiency?, or ?Modern Fitness?, or listed under their health and fitness category, as they are released.

The first exercise method that will be posted, rated, and according to them, ?how it can be greatly improved, so far more adults and seniors can benefit?, will cover the basic tread mill, and secondly will be the stationary bicycle. They will be evaluated only as cardio exercise machines, generically (no brand names).

Woman charged with murder in NYC subway death

Joshua Lott / Reuters

New York City police officers escort 31-year-old Erika Menendez to a waiting car as she screams in Queens, New York City, on Saturday.

By NBC News staff and wire services

NEW YORK?? A 31-year-old Bronx woman who was seen muttering to herself before shoving a man onto subway tracks in front of a speeding train said she did so because, "I hate Hindus and Muslims," prosecutors said.

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown identified the woman as Erika Menendez, 31. She has been charged with second-degree murder as a hate crime, New York City authorities said. In a statement, Brown said that awaits arraignment in Queens Criminal Court.

Menendez admitted to investigators that she pushed Sunando Sen, a 46-year-old Queens resident, on Thursday because of her hatred of Hindus and Muslims, a feeling that stems from Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Sen was born in India and ran a printing shop. He died Thursday night after being knocked onto the tracks. Police released security camera video showing a woman running from the station.

Police said that Menendez was recognized on the street in Brooklyn by a passer-by who called 911. Patrol officers found and arrested her.

Brown's statement said that while in custody Menendez made incriminating statements, saying that she "pushed a Muslim" onto the tracks. Brown also said:

"The defendant is accused of committing what is every subway?commuter's worst nightmare - being suddenly and senselessly pushed into the path of an oncoming train.?The victim was allegedly shoved from behind and had no chance to defend himself. Beyond that, the?hateful remarks allegedly made by the defendant and which precipitated the defendant's actions can never?be tolerated by a civilized society."

The attack was the second time this month that someone was pushed to their death in a New York City subway station. A homeless man was arrested in early December and accused of shoving a man in front of a train in Times Square. He is awaiting trial, and claimed he acted in self-defense.

Further details on how police managed to identify the suspect in Sen's death were not immediately available.

A woman is reportedly in custody in connection with the death of a man who was struck by an oncoming NYC subway.

Investigators had been following up on tips from people who had seen the security video and were checking homeless shelters and psychiatric units in an attempt to identify the woman.

It was unclear whether Menendez had any connection to Sen. Witnesses told police the two hadn't interacted on the platform as they both waited for the train.

Food and Drink: Unusual Ingredients in Recipes

The world of cooking has a lot of oddities. People do the strangest things and it seems to catch a lot of buzz. Herb recipes have paves the way for recipes with some of the strangest ingredients.

Gold

Who knows where this idea came from, but apparently it's a big thing. It's doubtful that these goodies are worth the extra cost, but people are drawn to the luxury on this one.

Gold Slick Vodka is fairly popular. This vodka has flakes of gold at the bottom. Another liqueur with the gold flakes is known as Gold Water. This particular product comes from Europe. It looks pretty in the bottle, that's for sure.

Gold is also often used in decorating cakes and other sweets. The flakes make a special finish to the product.

Beaver Castoreum

What is beaver castoreum anyways? It is certainly not for the squeamish that's for sure. This is one of those things similar to hot dogs, it's better to live in mystery. Beaver castoreum is apparently used to enhance raspberry flavoring. It is found in gum, candies and other foods. So what is this beaver castoreum? It is also known as beaver anal juice. Not kidding.

Nutella

This product just recently became popular, but it was fairly unheard of for a long time. It is the same consistency as peanut butter, but made of hazelnuts. Nutella is very sweet and is made with cocoa, so it tastes very much like a chocolate spread. For those who love chocolate, Nutella is something to covet. The product is very rich, can be used on just about anything and is excellent for baking. It should be used sensibly though as it fairly high in calories and fat.

Parsnips

The parsnip is a vegetable that doesn't get a lot of attention and not often seen on the menu. It is used in herb recipes. Parsnips are very nutritious and low in calories. It is rich in fiber and vitamin C. Parsnips are excellent roasted. Another good use for them is in mashed potatoes. Using half the amount of potatoes and substituting in parsnips for the other half is a great way to lighten up herb recipes or mashed potatoes without taking away any of the flavor. They mash well too.

Douchi

This is an Asian ingredient also known as fermented black beans. It is not actually black beans though, it is soybeans that have turned black from the fermenting process. Douchi is generally used for making sauces and pastes for stir fries. Douchi also makes a good marinade for roasted meats. Sometimes these soy beans are added to meals whole, but that is not very common.

Bee Pollen

Bee pollen consists of both honey and the bee's pollen. It is used to make bread and used in herb recipes.

Prahok

This is a Cambodian ingredient that smells like Camembert cheese. The people preserve fish that is gray. It is a similar ingredient to anchovies. Not a lot of this ingredient needs to be used; a little bit goes a long ways. It is the most distinctive food of the culture, used in herb recipes. It goes to show that smelly ingredients aren't to be avoided.

'We are being shot at': NY firefighters' plea for help

Police say they recovered a rambling typewritten note from 62-year-old William Spengler, who lured New York firefighters into a deadly ambush. NBC's Ron Mott reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

The terrifying moment when a gunman ambushed volunteer firefighters in upstate New York was captured in a chilling radio transmission made as the tragedy unfolded.

William Spengler, 62, opened fire on the volunteers as they responded to a blaze in Webster just before 6 a.m. ET Monday in a small cluster of homes near Lake Ontario, police said.

Michael Chiapperini, 43, a lieutenant with the Webster police, and Tomasz Kaczowka, 19, were shot dead, and Spengler killed himself as seven houses burned around him.

"We are being shot at," an unidentified voice told a 911 dispatcher in a recording aired Wednesday on NBC's TODAY. "Multiple firemen down. Multiple firemen are shot. I am shot. I think he is using an assault rifle."

Police investigating Monday?s killings said Tuesday that they had found what appeared to be human remains at the gunman's home. Authorities said they believed the remains were those of Spengler?s 67-year-old sister, Cheryl, who lived with him.

Two other firefighters, Joseph Hofstetter and Theodore Scardino, were shot but survived. One was struck by a bullet in the pelvis and the other in the chest and knee, NBCNewYork.com reported. It said the two were described as stable in a hospital and were expected to survive.

Cops said Spengler left a three-page typewritten note saying he wanted to burn down the neighborhood and "do what I like doing best, killing people."

?He was equipped to go to war, kill innocent people," Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering told reporters Tuesday.

The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle said Wednesday that the funeral for Chiapperini, who was also a 20-year veteran of the Webster Police Department, will be Sunday, while a funeral Mass for Kaczowka, who graduated from high school last year, will be celebrated in Rochester at 10 a.m. ET Monday.

Spengler had lived in the house with his sister and mother, Arline, who died in October at 91. Arline Spengler's obituary asked that memorial donations be made to the West Webster Fireman's Association.

Watch US News crime videos on NBCNews.com

A former neighbor told The Associated Press that Spengler "loved his mama to death" and that he "couldn't stand" his sister. The neighbor said he thought Spengler "went crazy" after his mother died.

Spengler was convicted of manslaughter in 1981 after the death of his grandmother, Rose Spengler, 92, and was paroled in 1998. He remained under parole supervision until 2006, the Democrat and Chronicle reported. Before Monday's shooting, Webster police hadn't had any run-ins with Spengler since he was paroled, they said.

Although Spengler couldn't legally own firearms as a convicted felon, police said he was armed with a Smith & Wesson .38 revolver, a 12-gauge pump shotgun and a Bushmaster .223 caliber rifle.

At least 33 people were displaced by the fire, which engulfed at least seven homes and a motor vehicle.

Ron Mott, Jason White and Andrew Mach of NBC News, NBCNewYork.com and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Best Android apps of 2012

Our favorite Android apps, that were either released or received significant updates in 2012, are all available free of charge. This year?s list is topped by Instagram, which had the biggest breakthrough on Android, and showcases new and meaningfully updated apps that simply work better than their competitors. In this age of algorithmic aggregation, we also salute titles that have a decidedly human touch.

Instagram?s arrival to Android was a positive development to say the least for the photo-sharing pioneer. Within one week, Instagram attracted more than 5 million downloads. A few days later, the company was acquired by Facebook for what was at the time a 10-figure valuation. Why include Instagram on this list? Because the photo-sharing app didn?t start breaking records until it opened up to the Android community, where it gained millions of new users and hundreds of millions of new filter-fab photos. Instagram is known for its filters, of course, which add a retro feel to any photo. Don?t forget to geo-tag and hashtag your photos, to make them easier to share and discover with other Instagram users around the world.

From reading commentary during live news and sporting events, to sharing information about public transportation during Hurricane Sandy, to finding out what your friends are up to this weekend, Twitter in 2012 emerged as a (if not the) primary resource for real-time news and information for mainstream users. With millions of feeds to follow, however, it?s challenging for five-year veterans and newbies alike to keep this vast flow of information organized. While there are many third-party apps that help users categorize who and what they follow on Twitter, Slices is the best one for smartphones right now.

The worldwide leader in socially curated news had a busy year after being named our favorite iOS app of 2011. Highlights from 2012 include Flipboard?s arrival on Android devices, YouTube, and Google+ integration, as well as a picture-perfect partnership with the New York Times. I?d argue that it?s better to read all the news that?s fit to print via Flipboard than anywhere else.

Audio streaming services like Pandora, Slacker and Spotify are changing the ways in which we consume music. Rather than listening to albums or pre-programmed playlists, we now have access to entire ?stations? on our computers and mobile devices built around our favorite artists and songs. This year, the Songza app added a human element to this kind of algorithmic-driven music curation with a major update that showcases playlists created for particular moods or times of day. Best of all, even after hundreds of hours of happy listening, I still haven?t heard an ad on the free service.

You no longer need to feel guilty about wasting the day away curled up on the couch watching television. With the Viggle iPhone app, you can get compensated from the likes of Amazon.com, Starbucks and the Gap merely for watching and checking in to many of your favorite programs. Viggle uses audio recognition technology similar to what is found in apps like IntoNow and Shazam to do much of the work for you. Just sit back and appreciate that you are getting rewarded for doing absolutely nothing.

While there were no technological breakthroughs from this Sony-developed video-streaming service in 2012, we salute Crackle for its exclusive programming. In August, Jerry Seinfeld returned to the small screen with his ?Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee? online series that was shown exclusively on Crackle. Netflix and Hulu may be splashier, but neither could show Seinfeld riffing with Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner while eating Chicken in the Pot soup and watching Jeopardy.

Although podcasts don?t have the same pop-culture cachet as apps, the digital audio files are a godsend to talk-radio junkies and anyone who appreciates the spoken word. From past episodes of This American Life and Wait Wait?Don?t Tell Me! to comedy programs like The Nerdist and WTF with Marc Maron, to long-form interviews from your favorite sports commentators, there are podcasts that appeal to virtually every interest. The best bet for podcast discovery on Android devices comes from the fifth-generation edition of Stitcher Radio, which rolled out earlier this year.

Highlight, which alerts you when a Facebook friend or individual with similar interests is in your vicinity, was the most successful app of its kind to emerge from South By Southwest in March. Since that time, Highlight has significantly improved with new features that let users send group messages to those nearby and comment on their friends? profiles. The app?s notification system is also vastly improved.

While many were predicting the demise of Pocket with the arrival of iOS 6 and the ability to read articles offline in Safari, the app remains the best ?Read it Later? alternative for all Android devices. Accessing content through the app is a pleasure. Its other features ? such as changing text size, sharing through myriad services, and archiving finished content ? are simple and intuitive.

Although Zinio first appeared on iOS devices in 2009, the digital magazine application is more recently pioneering how consumers purchase advertised and editorially curated products on touchscreen devices. A partnership with ShopAdvisor lets readers purchase and learn more about products they are interested in without leaving the page they are reading. Zinio has a roster of more than 5,500 publications that can be read seamlessly across any mobile and desktop device worth owning.

How Mobile Technologies Are Changing 'Traditional Employment ...

How Mobile Technologies Are Changing Traditional Employment 300x199 How Mobile Technologies Are Changing Traditional EmploymentIn the last ten years, the number of Americans working from home climbed by more than 40%.

According to the most recent Census Bureau data, 13.4 million people currently work from home in the United States, which is four million more than the number of home-based workers documented in 1999.

Thanks to the rampant growth of tablet computers, sophisticated smartphones, and the relative ease with which people can connect and interact from almost anywhere on the planet, companies are beginning to change how they do business and where they station their employees.

Coupled with the ongoing economic troubles of our time, mobile technologies are going to dramatically impact the nature of conventional employment in the coming years. Specifically, says a new report from InformationWeek, ?work is beginning to move away from long-term commitments to more project-based or freelance work.?

Erik Brynjolfsson, the director of the MIT Center for Digital Business, says: ?I think we?ll see a lot more of this as transaction costs and search costs and [as] search costs fall with new technologies, the old jobs disappear.?

By ?old? job, he means the 9-to-5 job, where an employee goes in and has a pretty structured work day. In a NY Times article about fitness trainers, Brynjolfsson said the 9-to-5 secure job is becoming more scarce, and people will need to hustle to make a living.

In other words, mobile technologies will make it easier for individuals to work from home or remotely, yet the demands of their jobs could similarly change for the worse.

Josh Elman, a Principal at Greylock who formerly worked at LinkedIn, added to the report, saying: ?we thought [work] was all networked-based. You would amass connections over your career and then leverage your network for new opportunities, important connections (sales, business development, and investment), advice, and expertise. What I see changing most now it that jobs and careers seem more project-based instead of company-based. The freelance economy is huge ? whether it?s just companies such as Uber, Taskrabbit, Gigwalk or like oDesk, 99 Designs, or marketplaces like Behance or Contently get this to be higher and higher end.?

How has mobile impacted your life and career in recent years? Do you expect further changes in 2013 and beyond? If so, MMW would love to hear from you in a comment below.

Scan and Match Rolls Out to Google Play in U.S.

Google Music

The scan-and-match technology Google rolled out to Google Play last month in Europe is now available in the U.S.

The option saves you from having to upload all your music song by song; Google will scan your music library and add matching songs online via the cloud.

"Add up to 20,000 songs from your music collection to Google Play and stream it to your Android devices and your computer, anywhere you go," the Google Play team said in a post to Google+.

The move "gets your songs into your online music library on Google Play much faster," Google said. Music will be streamed at up to 320 kbps.

Amazon and Apple have similar services, but both cost $25. Scan and match was added to Amazon Cloud Player in July, while iTunes Match went live in Nov. 2011.

Google Music launched just over a year ago, and it lets users store songs in the cloud for free and buy tracks directly from Google Play. Users can store and stream up to 20,000 songs in the Google cloud for free, and buy other songs from Google Play.

For more, see PCMag's review of Google Music, our hands on with iTunes Match, and review of Amazon Cloud Player.

Boot up: Samsung tops smartphones, Instagram responds, iPlayer and Android, and more

A quick burst of 8 links for you to chew over, as picked by the Technology team

Samsung's world share of smartphones at 28% for 2012; Apple's at 20%. Nokia, HTC and RIM at 5%. That leaves 37% of smartphones split among huge numbers of tiny Chinese manufacturers. As a proportion. smartphones will be 47% of world shipments in 2012, IHS iSuppli estimates, while total mobile shipments will fall by 1%.

Kevin Systrom, chief executive of Instagram:

Legal documents are easy to misinterpret. So I'd like to address specific concerns we've heard from everyone.

Funny how lawyers who read those updated terms had the same interpretation as everyone else.

Spain lost nearly 486,183 mobile lines and datacards in October, ending the month with a total mobile base of 53.71m users, down by 3.1% over the same month of 2011, according to a report by Spanish regulator CMT.

A sign of economic stress? Business accounts being closed? Hard to know. Still feels like something is happening though.

Alexis Madrigal:

Here's an alternative version of what Instagram could have done before Facebook purchased them. Instagram has, what, 100 million users? If they got $5 a month from 20 million of those users, they'd be looking at $300 million in quarterly revenue. That's a nice chunk of change when you have a baker's dozen employees. You think those guys could split more than a billion dollars a year and call it good. Or hell, make the user numbers an order of magnitude smaller: 2 million out of 10 million users. That's still $30 million dollars a quarter for 13 guys.

Eminently sensible. Of course that's Spotify's model, roughly.

Dave Price, head of BBC iPlayer, Programmes and On Demand:

?The BBC launched the BBC Media Player for Android nearly three months ago. Since then it has been downloaded to more than one million Android phones and tablets.

In this short period of time we've witnessed a dramatic change in the Android platform and in BBC usage on the platform.

When we launched, seven inch Android tablets weren't driving significant usage. Fast forward three months and the Kindle Fire HD and the Nexus 7 are now both firmly in the top five Android devices for BBC iPlayer and the BBC Media Player.

The Android platform is extremely important to the BBC and our audience and engineering for it requires an ongoing commitment.

And that commitment is big - really big - because there are more than 1500 different Android devices requiring support, and no simple way to support them all.

Horace Dediu:

What's worse, the market may have been cornered -- there may be no suppliers [of the essential data]. Unlike hardware components, the maps component is not a commodity with a market of suppliers. The work needed to maintain the maps is a commodity but the aggregation and consolidation of the data is valuable and those who have gained control over the data and they are not likely to license it to any competitors for strategic (i.e. political) reasons.

So we have a perverse situation of a very costly, unprofitable asset requiring duplication of maintenance effort by politically motivated actors imprisoned by their own strategic interests.

Got the headline, right? Ah, but read on:

HTC Corp scrapped plans to produce a large-screen smartphone using Microsoft's operating system because the screen would have had lower resolution than competing models, a person familiar with the project said.

The Windows software doesn't support resolutions as high as that on Google's Android platform, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the information isn't public.

Chief executive officer Peter Chou's decision to halt the project using Windows Phone 8 software leaves HTC with only Android for phones measuring larger than 5 inches diagonally, dealing a blow to Microsoft in its efforts to win share from Google and Apple.

So this was going to be a "phone" larger than 5in, to compete with the Galaxy Note. Not in the generality of the smartphone space. A key question: at what size does Microsoft stop you using Windows Phone and insist on Windows 8? (Thanks @modelportfolio2003 for the link.)

Q In the future, are all PCs going to have touch screens?

For cost considerations there might always be some computers without touch, but I believe that the vast majority will. We're seeing that the computers with touch are the fastest-selling right now. I can't imagine a computer without touch anymore. Once you've experienced it, it's really hard to go back.

Lots of implications in this. (Thanks @rquick for the link.)

Panettiere overcomes stage fright with 'Nashville'

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? While Hayden Panettiere is pretending to be a country music singer on TV, she's learning how to be one in real life.

The 23-year-old actress plays ambitious country star Juliette Barnes on the hit ABC show "Nashville" (Wednesdays, 10 p.m. Eastern). Her character has performed on the Grand Ole Opry, dealt with the demands of a record label executive, written songs and tracked vocals in a recording studio.

"The show, I feel like, is an amazing second step for me because I love music and I've always had such terrible stage fright," said Panettiere, who recently earned a Golden Globe nomination for best performance by a television actress in a supporting role.

"This has been kind of the in between because I get to go out there during scenes with a crowd full of people and pretend like I'm performing onstage, and I'm actually performing a live show," she continued. "It's one thing when you put yourself out there (as a solo artist), it's another thing when you're playing a character. ... Beyonce has her alter ego (Sasha Fierce), and people create these alter egos because it seems like a little bit more protection when you put yourself out there for all to see."

Her confidence as a singer is growing, as is her credibility. She sings all of her own songs in the show, some of which are featured on the "Nashville" soundtrack, released last week. Big Machine Records put out her song "Telescope" as the show's first official single, and it's a Top 40 hit on the Billboard country songs chart.

The former "Heroes" actress has dabbled in music before, performing tracks for various Disney films and releasing the pop single "Wake Up Call" in 2008, which failed to chart. A full album was never released.

She says doing the show is teaching her about the music industry, and that getting a warm response from the Music City community is encouraging.

"There's no cooler feeling than someone coming up to you from Nashville ... and going, 'Thank you for portraying us in such a great light, in such an honest light, because people who are not from the South have this image and this idea,'" she said.

The show boasts Grammy-winning musician and producer T Bone Burnett as its executive music producer and an accomplished cast, including co-star Connie Britton who also earned a Golden Globes nomination for best performance by an actress in a television series drama.

"There are no words to describe this, either I'm going to start tearing up or I'm going to make more grilled cheese," Panettiere said just hours after she found out about the nominations. "It's so amazing, because we had such high hopes and sometimes you feel like things are too good to be true, and I felt like the show was everything that I dreamt of as an actor and as a musician."

Panettiere says hearing her song on the radio for the first time is a moment she'll always remember. She had just hopped into her car on a crisp, fall day with her best friend sitting shotgun. She turned the key, and her name popped up on the dashboard.

"I just bugged out," she said. "I couldn't believe it. I was trying to take pictures at the same time. But it's surreal. ... There are no words to describe how special and exciting that moment is. And nerve-wracking, too, very nerve-wracking."

Pet Dogs | Dogs And Cats Friends Or Enemies | Puppy Dog

What people probably do not know is that dogs and cats share similar characteristic traits where both of them are considered among the predator group of animals. This means that they are preying animals or looking to catch an inferior animal for food. By nature a dog or a cat get very much excited once they sense strange or sudden movements around them. This is the reason why some cats are wont to leap at any moving object, for instance a moving curtain that is being blown by the wind. They get excited by flying objects and swift moving tiny animals like rats which have become their favorite target for food.

Dogs, on the other hand have the preying instinct to catch animals that are smaller in size than themselves, also termed as the prey drive. So then people should always watch out and be careful even if their pet dogs are considered tame because their prey drive is just dormant.

In the meantime, kittens get their training in catching prey when they play around with moving objects, even chase their very own tail. When they grow older, their animal instinct takes over.

Meanwhile dogs are motivated to start a chase when cats disturb the dog?s peace. It would be very wise for the owners to protect these animals from hurting each other by practically putting them away from one another like separate areas in the house.

Nevertheless if you plan to have both the pet dog and pet cat together inside the house and at the same time expect them to coexist peacefully then you better do some good dog training for your pet. There are many ways to train a dog and perhaps the first thing that it has to learn is to get acquainted with a future friend in the house which is the cat.

You shouldn?t forget though that the animal instinct in the dog or the cat may come to play when any of these pets detect each others presence. A fight will of course ensue and expectedly a chase between the two pets will surely follow. There will be chaos all over the house because of this and the peace that you long for is abruptly shattered.

Therefore you better start the training of your pet dog before any untoward disaster occurs in your house. The next step in training the pet dog is to make it familiarize itself with the presence of another predator inside the house. You should be able to show appreciation for the dog?s behavior as it get used to having the cat around. You may give the dog a pat or a treat whenever it is able to ignore the taunting of the cat.

A single cat should never be mingled or brought together in the company of two or more dogs. Remember that there is always the danger that any of the dogs might want to play catch a prey with the cat. Distancing the dog and cat from one another should be brought to mind particularly during feeding time. Their animal instinct is for survival so they really get harsh when their food is being eyed by another animal.

The leave it command should be obeyed by the dog at all times especially when its preying instinct is triggered. You should treat both animals equally with kindness and reward them with their good behavior.

On the part of the owner, patience is required because of the limited means of communication with the pets. Instruction is usually made through body language and done over and over until the dog learns. The prize is worth your while anyways because you will attain a peaceful and harmonious coexistence with your pet dog and cat.

New research suggests that consuming whole eggs may improve blood lipids

Park Ridge, Ill. (December 14, 2012) It is estimated that 34% of Americans are affected by an increasingly prevalent condition known as metabolic syndrome which is a combination of at least three of the following risk factors: large waistline, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure and elevated blood sugar.(i) These individuals have a variety of risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Decades of mixed messaging regarding dietary cholesterol have led to avoidance of certain foods, such as eggs, particularly among individuals who are faced with health conditions. However, a recent study published in Metabolism suggests that including whole eggs as part of a weight loss diet may have positive effects on lipoprotein profiles for individuals with metabolic syndrome.(ii)

In this study, middle-aged men and women with metabolic syndrome consumed either three whole eggs or an equivalent amount of egg substitute daily as part of a carbohydrate-restricted, weight loss diet.(ii) Although participants eating the whole eggs were consuming twice as much cholesterol as they had at the beginning of the study, the researchers observed no effects on total blood cholesterol or LDL cholesterol levels after 12 weeks on the diet. All participants, including those consuming whole eggs, had improved lipid profiles with decreases in plasma triglycerides and increases in HDL cholesterol.(ii)

"Eating egg yolks was actually associated with enhanced health benefits in these high-risk individuals," explains Dr. Maria Luz Fernandez, lead study author and Professor at the University of Connecticut, "Subjects consuming whole eggs had greater increases in HDL cholesterol and more significant reductions in the LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio than those who ate the cholesterol-free egg substitute."

A Closer Look at the Incredible Egg

The United States Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service has reported that eggs now have 14 percent less cholesterol (down from 215 mg to 185 mg) and 64 percent more vitamin D than previously thought.(iii) Naturally nutrient-rich, one large egg provides varying amounts of 13 essential vitamins and minerals, including nutrients that aren't found abundantly in other foods, including vitamin D and choline. Many of these nutrients reside in the yolk, such as lutein and zeaxanthin, which are antioxidants that may prevent macular degeneration and consequent age-related blindness. While eggs contain only small amounts of these nutrients, research shows that lutein and zeaxanthin from eggs may be more bioavailable, or better used by the body, than from more concentrated sources like supplements.(iv) A recent study published in Food and Function found that daily consumption of egg yolks was associated with increases in plasma lutein, zeaxanthin and ?-carotene in people with metabolic syndrome, which is typically associated with low levels of these important nutrients.(v)

High-Quality Egg Protein and Weight Management

Weight management is a crucial aspect of preventing and managing chronic disease such as metabolic syndrome. All-natural, high-quality protein helps build muscle and allows people to feel fuller longer and stay energized, which can assist with weight management.(vi, vii) In fact, an egg breakfast, compared with a bagel breakfast of similar calories, has been shown to lead to greater feelings of fullness and reduced food intake at later meals, resulting in a significant reduction in BMI and waist circumference.(viii)

Dr. Dixie Harms, a nurse practitioner specializing in diabetes care, suggests starting the day with a protein-rich breakfast as a good weight-management strategy, a first line of defense in preventing chronic disease. "Management of chronic disease takes a coordinated effort with diet and lifestyle," says Harms, "A balanced breakfast including high-quality protein plus regular physical activity can help put individuals on a path to a healthier lifestyle."

Luckily, it's easy to create a nutritious breakfast. Pair eggs with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy foods as part of an overall healthy diet.
