A brick bearing Jerry Sandusky's name and that of his Second Mile charity has been removed from a walkway in downtown State College, Pennsylvania. The brick is one of nearly 3,000 along Centennial Walkway in the downtown part of campus. The bricks bear the names of many notable figures from Penn State, including former President Graham Spanier and his wife as well as other alumni. The Sandusky brick had gone mostly unnoticed as students passed through McAllister Alley, not far from the school's Old Main building, until it was noticed on Wednesday by the student-run independent Penn State blog Onward State and photographed by others, including a CNN journalist in State College. The photo prompted calls for it to be pulled up, considering the school had torn down a statue of legendary former coach Joe Paterno in the wake of a scandal that has left Sandusky jailed for sexually abusing 10 boys over a period of 15 years. The school had no authority to remove the brick, many mentioned, since it wasn't on Penn State property.Pat Daugherty, owner of the Tavern, a restaurant located along the walkway, said he received a call from State College Borough Manager Thomas J. Fountaine II on Thursday morning saying he had received calls after the photos circulated online."We honestly were not aware the brick was there until a day or two ago," Fountaine said.He said it took a couple days to figure out whether officials could remove the brick, because ownership of the pedestrian walkway was unclear, but it wasn't specifically borough property. That's when Fountaine called Daughterty, who offered to remove the brick."There was some vandalism that was occurring as well," Fountaine said. "Because of that and other issues, we thought it was appropriate to remove it."Daugherty said he would probably return the brick to the borough because somebody had probably paid to have it put there during the school's centennial celebration.

It?s impossible to control what others say about your business on the internet.

What you can control are the actions you take after you listen in on the chatter.

Perform an internet search of your company?s name to see what pops up in the search engine ? this is what your customers see when they look you up.

To know when someone mentions your business, you can create an internet search alert (with Google or Yahoo) or make a custom feed that automatically notifies you when your company?s name or other keywords are mentioned.

Managing Your Reputation

Managing conversations about your business can be tricky.

First, claim your business on local search sites and review sites so you have more control over your listings.

Then review the comments about your business without taking the feedback personally.

Respond to complaints with polite private messages that request more information so you can work on making positive changes.

Then use the various social networks and their tools to promote your good name.

People all over the world are talking about your business. Do you know what they?re saying?

Over to you

Worst Alcoholic Beverages for Weight Loss | Fast Slim Body

It is not easy to lose weight so knowing what the worst alcoholic beverages for weight loss are is important for effective weight loss. Many people refer to their stomach as a beer belly for a reason! They know they are drinking a beverage that tends to promote weight gain instead of weight loss.

When you drink alcohol it stimulates your appetite so you are more likely to eat foods that are fattening, as well as more in volume. As a matter of fact, this is one of the reasons why people gain weight when they drink. They eat more fattening foods in larger proportions.

Top Alcoholic Beverages and the Calories

Knowing how much calories you are consuming when you drink an alcoholic beverage can help you choose the better beverage as well as control your portions. Keep in mind that even a lite beer has plenty of calories. Sometimes people will drink more lite beers because they feel the lite beers don?t affect their diets like other alcoholic beverages. This means they will end up consuming more calories because they feel lite beer is safe for a diet.

Here are some alcoholic beverages and the calories in them.
* Beer has 150 calories in a 12 Oz serving. There are also 13 grams of carbohydrates which can also lead to gaining weight.
* Lite beer has 100 calories and 5 grams of carbohydrates in every 12 Oz serving. Many people think lite means they can drink more and will consume more than one serving. This is a mistake if you want to lose weight.
* Distilled spirits such as whisky, brandy, rum, and gin contain about 100 calories in a 1.5 Oz serving. This doesn?t include the mixes that are used to make a drink. Some mixers are very high in calories which can make a mixed drink extremely fattening. There are only trace amounts of carbohydrates in distilled spirits.
* Wine has typically about 80 to 100 calories per 4 Oz serving (half a glass). This is for both red and white wines. One glass of wine on occasion isn?t that bad but many people will drink more than 4 oz.

Worst Alcoholic Beverage

Mixed drinks are probably the worst alcoholic beverage for weight loss. This is because the calories are higher in mixed drinks. To give you an idea, a frozen margarita can have over 200 calories a drink, and a glass of pina colada can have over 500 calories.

Beers are probably the 2nd worst alcoholic beverage due to the fact that people typically end up drinking 2-3 bottles of beer.

?

It is up to you to drink less of the worst alcoholic beverages for weight loss. When you drink responsibly you can still lose weight. You will want to be careful of what you eat while you are drinking as this is where many of the calories come from. Also, keep in mind that your body becomes dehydrated when you indulge in alcoholic drinks. This may add to the feeling of hunger, so be sure to keep yourself hydrated when drinking anything alcoholic.

be lovely

Tonight as I rocked Trey to sleep I thought of a question for myself.

Why do I love adoption as much as I do? ?It took me a while to pinpoint exactly what it was, ?and I decided I needed to put it all out on paper... for myself, and also because a lot of you may be wondering the same thing.

I love adoption because... it brought my brother home and my life would not be the same without my Treybebaby.

I love adoption because... I am adopted... by God.

I love adoption because... I watched dear friends bring home their kids through adoption and I knew I loved it the moment I watched it all happen. ?(AKA it's a God thing:))

I love adoption because... God gave me a heart for orphans when I went to Africa and I've never been the same since.

I love adoption because... I've seen the need firsthand in Africa and from that moment forward I knew I loved that place and the need there. ?I realized afterwards why God did that to me. ?To give me a heart for orphans.

I love adoption because... My family did foster care and I saw the system and I saw how it all worked. ?I saw the need firsthand and it was just another?reassurance?that forever is beautiful :)

I love adoption because... It brings sweet babies home for ever and ever and gives them another chance at life.

I love adoption because... God gave me two best friends/sisters... who came home via adoption. ?I would not be the person I am today without them.

I love adoption because... it changed my whole life. ?It changed the way I look at everything. ?It changed the way I think about every little thing in my life. ?Adoption changed my life. ?And I want it to change more.

It's hard... to pinpoint exactly in what area adoption has impacted me. ?I say a lot that it has impacted me, but to figure out exactly in what area... it's almost impossible for me. ?When I think about it... I'd say this:

Adoption has impacted me in every area possible of my life. ?It forces me to think more about how God would want it. ?It puts me through challenges everyday. ?It's changed the idea of my future. ?It's changed my family. ?But most importantly... it changed my heart. ?Adoption is what formed me into who I am today. ?It's what made me me. ?First and foremost because the Lord adopted me into His family even when I wasn't deserving of it, and now I get to be a part of His family for the rest of my life (and ever and ever and ever :)). ?If that doesn't change your life I don't know what will. ?Secondly because of how much adoption has impacted my life here on earth.

What makes me laugh the most is that I have no idea why it has impacted me so much. ?I have no idea why it's such a big thing in my life. ?I guess that's because the Lord put it in my life. ?So stay tuned... you never know what might happen in my life next related to adoption :)

Official: Anarchist GIs plotted government ouster

Four Army soldiers based in southeast Georgia killed a former comrade and his girlfriend to protect an anarchist militia group they formed that stockpiled assault weapons and plotted a range of anti-government attacks, prosecutors told a judge Monday.

Prosecutors in rural Long County, near the sprawling Army post Fort Stewart, said the militia group composed of active duty and former U.S. military members spent at least $87,000 buying guns and bomb components and was serious enough to kill two people ? former soldier Michael Roark and his 17-year-old girlfriend, Tiffany York ? by shooting them in the woods last December in order to keep its plans secret.

"This domestic terrorist organization did not simply plan and talk," prosecutor Isabel Pauley told a Superior Court judge. "Prior to the murders in this case, the group took action. Evidence shows the group possessed the knowledge, means and motive to carry out their plans."

One of the Fort Stewart soldiers charged in the case, Army Pfc. Michael Burnett, also gave testimony that backed up many of the assertions made by prosecutors. The 26-year-old soldier pleaded guilty Monday to manslaughter, illegal gang activity and other charges. He made a deal to cooperate with prosecutors in their case against the three other soldiers.

Prosecutors said the group called itself F.E.A.R., short for Forever Enduring Always Ready. Pauley said authorities don't know how many members the militia had.

Burnett, 26, said he knew the group's leaders from serving with them at Fort Stewart. He agreed to testify against fellow soldiers Pvt. Isaac Aguigui, identified by prosecutors as the militia's founder and leader, Sgt. Anthony Peden and Pvt. Christopher Salmon.

All are charged by state authorities with malice murder, felony murder, criminal gang activity, aggravated assault and using a firearm while committing a felony. A hearing for the three soldiers was scheduled Thursday.

Prosecutors say Roark, 19, served with the four defendants in the 4th Brigade Combat Team of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division and became involved with the militia. Pauley said the group believed it had been betrayed by Roark, who left the Army two days before he was killed, and decided the ex-soldier and his girlfriend needed to be silenced.

Burnett testified that on the night of Dec. 4, he and the three other soldiers lured Roark and York to some woods a short distance from the Army post under the guise that they were going target shooting. He said Peden shot Roark's girlfriend in the head while she was trying to get out of her car. Salmon, he said, made Roark get on his knees and shot him twice in the head. Burnett said Aguigui ordered the killings.

"A loose end is the way Isaac put it," Burnett said.

Aguigui's attorney, Daveniya Fisher, did not immediately return a phone call from The Associated Press. Attorneys for Peden and Salmon both declined to comment Monday.

Also charged in the killings is Salmon's wife, Heather Salmon. Her attorney, Charles Nester, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Pauley said Aguigui funded the militia using $500,000 in insurance and benefit payments from the death of his pregnant wife a year ago. Aguigui was not charged in his wife's death, but Pauley told the judge her death was "highly suspicious."

She said Aguigui used the money to buy $87,000 worth of semiautomatic assault rifles, other guns and bomb components that were recovered from the accused soldiers' homes and from a storage locker. He also used the insurance payments to buy land for his militia group in Washington state, Pauley said.

In a videotaped interview with military investigators, Pauley said, Aguigui called himself "the nicest cold-blooded murderer you will ever meet." He used the Army to recruit militia members, who wore distinctive tattoos that resemble an anarchy symbol, she said. Prosecutors say they have no idea how many members belong to the group.

"All members of the group were on active-duty or were former members of the military," Pauley said. "He targeted soldiers who were in trouble or disillusioned."

The prosecutor said the militia group had big plans. It plotted to take over Fort Stewart by seizing its ammunition control point and talked of bombing the Forsyth Park fountain in nearby Savannah, she said. In Washington state, she added, the group plotted to bomb a dam and poison the state's apple crop. Ultimately, prosecutors said, the militia's goal was to overthrow the government and assassinate the president.

The Army brought charges against the four accused soldiers in connection with the slayings of Roark and York in March, but has yet to act on them. Fort Stewart spokesman Kevin Larson said he could not comment immediately on the militia accusations that emerged in civilian court Monday.

District Attorney Tom Durden said his office has been sharing information with federal authorities, but no charges have been filed in federal court. Jim Durham, an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Georgia, would not comment on whether a case is pending.

The Color Run 5K Is A Lot More Than Just Another Race

Every year, there are 25 different cities throughout the United States that host a Color Run 5K celebration. This is no ordinary 5K, and at the end of the race the runners will be a lot brighter and happier than at the end of any other race. Everyone gets to play a part in the joy that the race has to offer, and coming in last is by no means a bad thing. Participants of the race will get to have their plain white t-shirts colored for free, and they will also get a free race t-shirt upon completion. Part of the money that is gathered during the registration process will be donated to a local charity.

Racers usually start the race sporting a plain white t-shirt. Once the race begins, runners will be bombarded with colors every five minutes by volunteers on the Color Bomb Squad. Runners' t-shirts will rapidly transform from white to rainbow colored as the race begins. Each section of the race will have its own color, and the colors that are used are yellow, purple, blue, pink, and green. There is no need to be concerned about the safety of the colors - it is merely corn starch.

Everyone who takes part in the race will receive a t-shirt for the event, whether they are racers or volunteers. Sponsors of the function will show their support and gratitude by providing food and great music. All of this follows the greatest color celebration of the day where everyone will throw handfuls of color at each other.

The Color Run 5K gives a piece of the money collected from the registration fees to a local charity. More than 25 charities in the US are being supported because the Color Run 5K occurs in 25 different cities. The money collected in the course of the Color Run San Diego is donated to the charity known as Deaf Community Services of San Diego. Enriching the lives of the community of deaf and hard of hearing men and women in San Diego through services, education, and advocacy is the mission of this charity.

People who want to have a great time, see colors, and get some exercise would like the Color Run 5K. Not only will you be making yourself feel healthier, but you are even helping to give back to your community. You will meet great people and have a wonderful time either in San Diego or any of the other host cities in the US.

Gas prices rise as refineries shut for Isaac

The price of oil fell Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, as the threat to production from Tropical Storm Isaac appeared to lessen and traders speculated about a release of oil from U.S. reserves. (AP Photo/Danny Johnston)

(AP) ? Pump prices are heading higher as Tropical Storm Isaac forces several major refineries along the Gulf Coast to halt production in preparation for high winds and heavy rains.

Fear of reduced gasoline supplies sent wholesale gasoline prices up 7.7 cents, or 2.4 percent, to $3.155 per gallon Monday. The average retail price for a gallon of gasoline in the U.S. rose to $3.75 on Monday, and it could pass $3.80 by Labor Day weekend, says Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service.

Oil fell Monday because Gulf Coast refineries won't be using as much in the next few days and damage to key oil and gas operations in the Gulf of Mexico seemed less likely as the storm's winds aren't expected to be as strong as some had feared.

Refineries should also escape damage. But refinery owners often shut down operations in advance of a storm. These facilities consume enormous amounts of electric power and generate steam to cook crude oil into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and heating oil. If a refinery loses power suddenly, operators can't properly clear the partially cooked oil out of pipes, and re-starting the refinery can take several days or even weeks.

If refineries instead conduct what is known as an orderly shutdown, they can re-start as soon as the power supply is assured again. The Gulf refineries will likely stay off line for about three days.

About 1 million barrels per day of refining capacity is expected to be shut down, roughly half of the refining capacity in the potential path of the storm. The U.S. consumes about 19 million barrels of oil products per day.

Marathon Petroleum Corp. said it is shutting down its Garyville, La. refinery. The refinery has the capacity to refine 490,000 barrels of oil per day, making it the third largest refinery in the U.S. Phillips 66 is closing its 247,000 barrel per day refinery in Belle Chasse, La. Chevron Corp. is keeping its 330,000-barell per day Pascagoula, Miss. plant running as of Monday afternoon.

The National Hurricane Center now predicts Isaac will grow to a Category 1 hurricane instead of a Category 2. A Category 1 hurricane has winds ranging from 74 mph to 95 mph.

"The production centers in the Gulf can withstand those low-level hurricanes," said Gene McGillian, oil analyst for Tradition Energy.

About one-quarter of the nation's oil is produced in the Gulf of Mexico. As of Monday afternoon, about 80 percent of Gulf oil production was suspended, according to the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement. Companies have evacuated 346 oil and gas production platforms and 41 drilling rigs.

Benchmark oil fell 68 cents to end the day at $95.47 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent crude dropped $1.33 to $112.26 on the ICE Futures exchange.

There was renewed speculation that the Obama administration will release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the nation's emergency stockpile of oil. The White House has said a release is one option for combatting higher oil prices. Benchmark U.S. oil has risen 22 percent since late June. Brent crude, which is used to price international blends that many U.S. refineries use to make gasoline, is up 23 percent in the same period.

Gasoline prices have risen in recent weeks because of the higher oil prices and refinery problems in the Midwest and West Coast. At $3.75, the national average is at its highest level since May 9 and it is up about 42 cents from the low reached on July 2.

Analyst and oil trader Stephen Schork said in a daily newsletter that gasoline could rise as high as $3.90 by early October, increasing the odds that the administration will tap the SPR in an effort to bring down oil and gasoline prices.

Oil was previously released from the SPR to offset price spikes due to the loss of oil production in Libya last year and after Hurricane Katrina battered the Gulf Coast in 2005.

But if oil production and refinery operations can quickly resume after the storm passes, gasoline prices could soon fall on their own.

Kloza predicts that gasoline will begin to fall after Labor Day ? if another storm doesn't affect supplies ? as refiners switch to cheaper blends of gasoline and the summer driving season winds down. He expects retail prices to fall 20 to 40 per gallon cents in the next several weeks, and he thinks they could be well below $3.50 per gallon by early November.

In other energy trading:

--Natural gas fell 5 cents to $2.65 per 1,000 cubic feet. The government estimated that about 48 percent of Gulf natural gas production has been suspended due to the storm.

--Heating oil rose less than a penny to $3.11 a gallon.

Analysis: South Africa mine killings could hurt Zuma ahead of vote

MARIKANA, South Africa (Reuters) - South African's President Jacob Zuma rose to power as a man of the people but seemed a world away from the masses when he stood in a suit under a parasol to speak to destitute miners about the deadliest police killing since apartheid ended.

The deaths of 44 in a labor dispute this month at Lonmin's Marikana mine, including 34 armed miners shot by police, could undermine Zuma's populist appeal and threaten his chances in a December vote where he seeks re-election as the leader of the party that dominates politics.

Zuma's critics say the day last week he spoke to miners for a few minutes under the blazing sun showed him more beholden to special interest groups than to millions of South Africans waiting for him to ease poverty.

He took more time to speak to Lonmin's executives than miners and then left the mine to dance in front of cameras at a ruling African National Congress event, despite declaring a week of mourning.

"Our government is becoming a pig that is eating its own children," Julius Malema, the ANC Youth League expelled from the ruling party after crossing swords with Zuma, said at a memorial service on Thursday for the victims.

"Our government is failing to intervene in mines because our leaders are involved in mines," Malema said.

It is too early to tell how much damage Zuma will suffer from the killings at the Marikana mine, northwest of Johannesburg, but the president's foes have been using the event to store ammunition before December's vote.

"The fact that Zuma ordered police to bring the Lonmin strike under control has exposed him to accusations of complicity in the miners' deaths," Mark Rosenberg wrote in a note for the political risk consultancy Eurasia Group.

BUMPY ROAD

Banished from the ANC, Malema is in a position to say things ANC leaders cannot in public because the party prefers to confine debate to behind closed doors. It also makes Malema influential to those who want to unseat Zuma.

The incident, dubbed by local media the "Marikana Massacre" has hit the base of support that brought Zuma to power, widening a divide between him and his former backers in the Youth League.

The staunch support Zuma once had from the powerful COSATU labor federation has also been called into question with its flagship group, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), finding itself isolated by miners who say it has lost its focus on workers by cozying up to the ANC and mining giants.

Prior to the killings, Zuma seemed headed to a victory at the ANC election, which would put him in a position to remain as South Africa's president until 2019.

While he is still in the driver's seat, the road has become a lot bumpier.

"Before Lonmin, with NUM in his corner, the race was going to be easy but it's going to be difficult to get a clear consensus from COSATU when there are big people who are anti-Zuma," said a senior union official campaigning for Zuma's re-election who did not want to be named.

Nominations for the race open in October and the ANC forbids potential candidates from lobbying ahead of time.

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe is the most viable choice. Insiders say the man who served as caretaker president for eight months from September 2008 when the ANC recalled former President Thabo Mbeki to make way for Zuma, will only raise his hand if he knows he can win.

Before Marikana, Zuma's supporters are believed to have courted Cyril Ramaphosa, the former leader of NUM who is now an ANC heavyweight and one of the country's richest businessmen - offering him the position of deputy president.

The former labor leader and anti-apartheid activist Ramaphosa now sits on Lonmin's board as a non-executive director and has been called a sellout by Zuma's critics, such as former youth leader Malema.

"It's a different ball game now and Cyril is tainted," the Zuma campaign official said.

CRACKS IN SOCIETY

The incident has also laid bare cracks in society with an electorate complaining of growing levels of income inequality and the government's slow pace in addressing apartheid-era infrastructure backlogs in housing, education and healthcare.

Unemployment has inched up under Zuma while the country has slipped in Transparency International's rankings of perceived corruption. Several Zuma allies are being probed on suspicion of using political connections to line their pockets.

COSATU Secretary General Zwelinzima Vavi, a potential kingmaker and critic of what he calls a "predatory elite" among the political class, may be looking to garner support from unions in the federation to oppose Zuma's re-election, a senior union official said.

"Something like this (Marikana) is what Vavi and his followers were waiting for. It shows exactly what they were saying," the official said.

COSATU, with 2 million members and in a governing alliance with the ANC, has been a powerful vote gathering machine for the ruling party.

"Those who want to unseat Zuma could not ask for anything better," said a member of the ANC's national executive committee.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) ? A bit of Travers history unfolded at the finish line at Saratoga Race Course when Alpha caught Golden Ticket at the wire and the two finished in a dead heat for the win Saturday.

It was the first dead-heat finish in 143 runnings of the $1 million Travers, and had the crowd wondering who won for several minutes as the photo finish sign flashed on the infield toteboard. A few minutes later, the numbers of Golden Ticket and Alpha appeared, with the words dead heat alongside.

Fast Falcon finished third, a neck behind the winners. Atigun was fourth, followed by Nonios, Neck 'n Neck, Stealcase, Speightscity, Liaison, Five Sixteen and Street Life.

A Travers missing most of the top 3-year-olds, including retired Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I'll Have Another and Belmont winner Union Rags, turned into a race to remember on the 50th anniversary of another great finish. In the 1962 Travers, Jaipur and Ridan dueled the entire race before Jaipur won by a nose.

This was far from a two-horse race ? until the stretch. Speightscity shot straight to the lead from the rail as expected. Alpha, under Ramon Dominguez, was third and Golden Ticket well back in the field of 11. When the field turned for home, jockey David Cohen moved Golden Ticket inside and he took a clear lead.

But Alpha fought back and kept closing the margin as the two neared the wire and pulled even just as the two hit the finish together. Kiran McLaughlin, who trains Alpha, and Ken McPeek, who trains Golden Ticket, stood next to each other in the owners' boxes and high-fived after the final result was posted.

The winning time for the 1 1/4 miles was 2:02.74.

Alpha, the 2-1 favorite, returned $4.10, $5.10 and $3.90, and 33-1 long-shot Golden Ticket paid $26.80, $26.40 and $11.80. Fast Falcon, trained by Nick Zito, returned $13.60.

Alpha came into the Travers off a win in the Jim Dandy, while Golden Ticket was a last-minute entry by McPeek and had won only one of nine career starts.

In earlier races:

? Willy Beamin ($24.80) ran down the leaders in the stretch for a surprising win in the $500,000 King's Bishop just three days after the colt trained by Rick Dutrow Jr. won the Albany Stakes.

? Even-money choice Contested ($4) took the lead with an eighth-mile to go after losing her footing at the start and won the $500,000 Test Stakes for 3-year-old fillies by two lengths over Gypsy Robin. Trained by Bob Baffert, Contested won for the fifth time in her last six starts.

? Zagora ($5) took charge in the final eighth-mile and won the $250,000 Ballston Spa for fillies and mares by 1 1/2 lengths over Hungry Island.

Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, dies at 82

CINCINNATI (AP) ? Neil Armstrong was a soft-spoken engineer who became a global hero when as a steely-nerved pilot he made "one giant leap for mankind" with a small step onto the moon. The modest man, who had people on Earth entranced and awed from almost a quarter-million miles away, but credited others for the feat, died Saturday. He was 82.

Armstrong died following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures, his family said in a statement. Armstrong had had a bypass operation this month, according to NASA. His family didn't say where he died; he had lived in suburban Cincinnati.

Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon July 20, 1969, capping the most daring of the 20th century's scientific expeditions. His first words after becoming the first person to set foot on the surface are etched in history books and the memories of those who heard them in a live broadcast.

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," Armstrong said.

(Armstrong insisted later that he had said "a'' before man, but said he, too, couldn't hear it in the version that went to the world.)

In those first few moments on the moon, during the climax of a heated space race with the Soviet Union, Armstrong stopped in what he called "a tender moment" and left a patch to commemorate NASA astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts who had died in action.

"It was special and memorable but it was only instantaneous because there was work to do," Armstrong told an Australian television interviewer this year.

Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spent nearly three hours walking on the lunar surface, collecting samples, conducting experiments and taking photographs.

"The sights were simply magnificent, beyond any visual experience that I had ever been exposed to," Armstrong once said.

The moonwalk marked America's victory in the Cold War space race that began Oct. 4, 1957, with the launch of the Soviet Union's Sputnik 1, a 184-pound satellite that sent shock waves around the world.

Although he had been a Navy fighter pilot, a test pilot for NASA's forerunner and an astronaut, Armstrong never allowed himself to be caught up in the celebrity and glamour of the space program.

"I am, and ever will be, a white socks, pocket protector, nerdy engineer," he said in 2000 in one of his rare public appearances. "And I take a substantial amount of pride in the accomplishments of my profession."

Fellow Ohioan and astronaut John Glenn, one of Armstrong's closest friends, recalled Saturday how Armstrong was down to the last 15 seconds to 35 seconds of fuel when he finally brought the Eagle down on the Sea of Tranquility.

"That showed a dedication to what he was doing that was admirable," Glenn said.

A man who kept away from cameras, Armstrong went public in 2010 with his concerns about President Barack Obama's space policy that shifted attention away from a return to the moon and emphasized private companies developing spaceships. He testified before Congress, and in an email to The Associated Press, Armstrong said he had "substantial reservations," and along with more than two dozen Apollo-era veterans, he signed a letter calling the plan a "misguided proposal that forces NASA out of human space operations for the foreseeable future."

Armstrong was among the greatest of American heroes, Obama said in a statement.

"When he and his fellow crew members lifted off aboard Apollo 11 in 1969, they carried with them the aspirations of an entire nation. They set out to show the world that the American spirit can see beyond what seems unimaginable ? that with enough drive and ingenuity, anything is possible," Obama said.

Obama's Republican opponent Mitt Romney echoed those sentiments, calling Armstrong an American hero whose passion for space, science and discovery will inspire him for the rest of his life.

"With courage unmeasured and unbounded love for his country, he walked where man had never walked before. The moon will miss its first son of earth," Romney said.

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden recalled Armstrong's grace and humility.

"As long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be included in them, remembered for taking humankind's first small step on a world beyond our own," Bolden said in a statement.

Armstrong's modesty and self-effacing manner never faded.

When he appeared in Dayton in 2003 to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of powered flight, he bounded onto a stage before 10,000 people packed into a baseball stadium. But he spoke for only a few seconds, did not mention the moon, and quickly ducked out of the spotlight.

He later joined Glenn, by then a senator, to lay wreaths on the graves of Wilbur and Orville Wright. Glenn introduced Armstrong and noted it was 34 years to the day that Armstrong had walked on the moon.

"Thank you, John. Thirty-four years?" Armstrong quipped, as if he hadn't given it a thought.

At another joint appearance, the two embraced and Glenn commented: "To this day, he's the one person on earth I'm truly, truly envious of."

Armstrong's moonwalk capped a series of accomplishments that included piloting the X-15 rocket plane and making the first space docking during the Gemini 8 mission, which included a successful emergency splashdown.

In the years afterward, Armstrong retreated to the quiet of the classroom and his southwestern Ohio farm. Aldrin said in his book "Men from Earth" that Armstrong was one of the quietest, most private men he had ever met.

In the Australian interview, Armstrong acknowledged that "now and then I miss the excitement about being in the cockpit of an airplane and doing new things."

At the time of the flight's 40th anniversary, Armstrong again was low-key, telling a gathering that the space race was "the ultimate peaceful competition: USA versus U.S.S.R. It did allow both sides to take the high road with the objectives of science and learning and exploration."

Glenn, who went through jungle training in Panama with Armstrong as part of the astronaut program, described him as "exceptionally brilliant" with technical matters but "rather retiring, doesn't like to be thrust into the limelight much."

Derek Elliott, curator of the Smithsonian Institution's U.S. Air and Space Museum from 1982 to 1992, said the moonwalk probably marked the high point of space exploration.

The manned lunar landing was a boon to the prestige of the United States, which had been locked in a space race with the former Soviet Union, and re-established U.S. pre-eminence in science and technology, Elliott said.

"The fact that we were able to see it and be a part of it means that we are in our own way witnesses to history," he said.

The 1969 landing met an audacious deadline that President John F. Kennedy had set in May 1961, shortly after Alan Shepard became the first American in space with a 15-minute suborbital flight. (Soviet cosmonaut Yuri A. Gagarin had orbited the Earth and beaten the U.S. into space the previous month.)

"I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before the decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth," Kennedy had said. "No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important to the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish."

The end-of-decade goal was met with more than five months to spare. "Houston: Tranquility Base here," Armstrong radioed after the spacecraft settled onto the moon. "The Eagle has landed."

"Roger, Tranquility," Apollo astronaut Charles Duke radioed back from Mission Control. "We copy you on the ground. You've got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We're breathing again. Thanks a lot."

The third astronaut on the mission, Michael Collins, circled the moon in the mother ship Columbia 60 miles overhead while Armstrong and Aldrin went to the moon's surface.

Collins told NASA on Saturday that he will miss Armstrong terribly, spokesman Bob Jacobs tweeted.

In all, 12 American astronauts walked on the moon from 1969 to the last moon mission in 1972.

For Americans, reaching the moon provided uplift and respite from the Vietnam War, from strife in the Middle East, from the startling news just a few days earlier that a young woman had drowned in a car driven off a wooden bridge on Chappaquiddick Island by Sen. Edward Kennedy. The landing occurred as organizers were gearing up for Woodstock, the legendary three-day rock festival on a farm in the Catskills of New York.

Armstrong was born Aug. 5, 1930, on a farm near Wapakoneta in western Ohio. He took his first airplane ride at age 6 and developed a fascination with aviation that prompted him to build model airplanes and conduct experiments in a homemade wind tunnel.

As a boy, he worked at a pharmacy and took flying lessons. He was licensed to fly at 16, before he got his driver's license.

Armstrong enrolled in Purdue University to study aeronautical engineering but was called to duty with the U.S. Navy in 1949 and flew 78 combat missions in Korea.

After the war, Armstrong finished his degree from Purdue and later earned a master's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California. He became a test pilot with what evolved into the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, flying more than 200 kinds of aircraft from gliders to jets.

Armstrong was accepted into NASA's second astronaut class in 1962 ? the first, including Glenn, was chosen in 1959 ? and commanded the Gemini 8 mission in 1966. After the first space docking, he brought the capsule back in an emergency landing in the Pacific Ocean when a wildly firing thruster kicked it out of orbit.

Armstrong was backup commander for the historic Apollo 8 mission at Christmastime in 1968. In that flight, Commander Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and Bill Anders circled the moon 10 times, paving the way for the lunar landing seven months later.

Aldrin said he and Armstrong were not prone to free exchanges of sentiment.

"But there was that moment on the moon, a brief moment, in which we sort of looked at each other and slapped each other on the shoulder ... and said, 'We made it. Good show,' or something like that," Aldrin said.

An estimated 600 million people ? a fifth of the world's population ? watched and listened to the landing, the largest audience for any single event in history.

Parents huddled with their children in front of the family television, mesmerized by what they were witnessing. Farmers abandoned their nightly milking duties, and motorists pulled off the highway and checked into motels just to see the moonwalk.

Television-less campers in California ran to their cars to catch the word on the radio. Boy Scouts at a camp in Michigan watched on a generator-powered television supplied by a parent.

Afterward, people walked out of their homes and gazed at the moon, in awe of what they had just seen. Others peeked through telescopes in hopes of spotting the astronauts.

In Wapakoneta, media and souvenir frenzy was swirling around the home of Armstrong's parents.

"You couldn't see the house for the news media," recalled John Zwez, former manager of the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum. "People were pulling grass out of their front yard."

Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins were given ticker tape parades in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles and later made a 22-nation world tour. A homecoming in Wapakoneta drew 50,000 people to the city of 9,000.

In 1970, Armstrong was appointed deputy associate administrator for aeronautics at NASA but left the following year to teach aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati.

He remained there until 1979 and during that time bought a 310-acre farm near Lebanon, where he raised cattle and corn. He stayed out of public view, accepting few requests for interviews or speeches.

"He didn't give interviews, but he wasn't a strange person or hard to talk to," said Ron Huston, a colleague at the University of Cincinnati. "He just didn't like being a novelty."

Those who knew him said he enjoyed golfing with friends, was active in the local YMCA and frequently ate lunch at the same restaurant in Lebanon.

In 2000, when he agreed to announce the top 20 engineering achievements of the 20th century as voted by the National Academy of Engineering, Armstrong said there was one disappointment relating to his moonwalk.

"I can honestly say ? and it's a big surprise to me ? that I have never had a dream about being on the moon," he said.

From 1982 to 1992, Armstrong was chairman of Charlottesville, Va.-based Computing Technologies for Aviation Inc., a company that supplies computer information management systems for business aircraft.

He then became chairman of AIL Systems Inc., an electronic systems company in Deer Park, N.Y.

Armstrong married Carol Knight in 1999, and the couple lived in Indian Hill, a Cincinnati suburb. He had two adult sons from a previous marriage.

Armstrong's is the second death in a month of one of NASA's most visible, history-making astronauts. Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, died of pancreatic cancer on July 23 at age 61.

One of the NASA's closest astronaut friends was fellow Ohioan and Mercury astronaut Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth.

Just prior to the 50th anniversary of Glenn's orbital flight this past February, Armstrong offered high praise to the elder astronaut and said that Glenn had told him many times how he wished he, too, had flown to the moon on Apollo 11. Glenn said it was his only regret.

Noted Armstrong in an email: "I am hoping I will be 'in his shoes' and have as much success in longevity as he has demonstrated." Glenn is 91.

At the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles on Saturday, visitors held a minute of silence for Armstrong. For anyone else who wanted to remember him, his family's statement made a simple request:

"Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."
