Marin Family Action ? Blog Archive ? Block Party A Hit!

With a few dedicated volunteers, caring donors, the MFA Board and a couple of staff people from Marin Family Action, Manny Fernandez continually organizes and stages fun events that pull together community.

He does this repeatedly with one of the smallest event budgets I?ve ever seen . . . and he just did it again! The August 4 Hamilton Block Party was another great day for families organized by Marin Family Action with tremendous assistance from Manny?s son Nick Fernandez and his nephew Jason Lujan.

A bouncy playground for the kids. Photo D. A. Levy. The little kids who won the dance contest or hula hoop contest were Stars for the Day! We promise you that they will remember this for the rest of their lives. These are the types of community activities that brighten and change futures.

Without the help of Marin County Supervisors and MFA?s dedicated supporters AND Manny?s tireless work on behalf of the community, this type of activity would be impossible.

Thanks to MarinScope for recognizing this fine project and featuring the article about Neighborhood S.A.F.E.?s event on August 8th! The full story is here S.A.F.E. Block Party and it is reprinted below.

Marin County 5th District Supervisor Judy Arnold visited Hamilton in Novato August 4 to support Marin Family Action, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of low-income families and individuals, and attended its annual barbecue block party.

MFA?s Neighborhood S.A.F.E. (Safe and Friendly Environment) Program promotes educational events, a neighborhood watch, neighborhood activities and disaster preparedness. The free event is funded by Marin County supervisors, volunteers and MFA.

Kids of all ages tried out for the hula hoop contest and the popular dance contest,? said D.A. Levy, program director for MFA. ?Hundreds of tickets were sold to families vying for the grand prize of a big screen TV.?

MFA was founded in 1988 by Dorothy Hughes, who was inducted into Marin Women?s Hall of Fame for her efforts. Manny Fernandez, executive director since 2003, now directs the nonprofit.

Fernandez began giving seminars in homeless and transitional housing facilities throughout Marin County early on and helped low-income families resolve credit problems and obtain affordable housing.

After four years of utilizing office space in the First United Methodist Church in San Rafael, MFA was asked by the Marin Community Foundation, an organization that grants loans to support community issues in Marin, to participate in a one-stop shop of resources at the Marin Justice Center in San Rafael, according to MFA.

Since then MFA assists families in locating affordable housing, health insurance for children, repairing credit and understanding home ownership. When the mortgage bubble burst in 2008, the nonprofit added programs to help save homes from foreclosure.
